Allowable Stress on Slotted Structural Pipe

Hi,

I am designing a structural member of slotted pipe. The pipe wall may vary from thick to thin. But generally it will be >0.10 R.

The pipe is partially slotted for fluid flow, and we wish to optimise the number and size of slots. We are restricted by torque & compression bearing load requirements for the pipe.

The length of the slots is relatively short so I am discounting buckling effects. Also the ends are not free to warp.

I am currently using von mises to establish allowable loads. However I am concerned that as the pipe is slotted there might be other considerations/limitations of using this. Does anyone know of any empirical tests or more detailed discussion of this type of design problem?
