Wine casks were the first major application for alcohol for humane consumption in plastics.
Bottles are now also done in some regions, at least for beer.
Main objections or problems revolved around permeability, which if insufficent, allows oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.
Oxygen in reacts with alcohol to make acetaldehyde then acetic acid, or vinigar.
Carbon dioxide out lets beer etc go flat.
For plastic bottles or film to be used, technology needed to be developed to get the required barrier properties at an economical price. In wine casks, this is done by metalising the film, with bottles it is done by co-extrusion with a barrier layer resin liker EVOH
