Does anyone have a welding procedure for welding AL-6XN to carbon steel?? I have searched our AWS D1.6 for any information and I have also gone to vendors with no luck as of now. I realzize it is not a desirable weld.

For starters, I would suggest you review the information below regarding AL-6XN

See page 38 of the AL-6XN source book. The filler metal for this weld joint should be a Ni-base, like Incoweld A or 82/182 depending on the welding process.

The key is to limit the heat input for the AL6-XN. I would suggest you qualify a weld procedure for this application.

brane23;
I am going to ask one question regarding your OP, why are you welding CS to an alloy that has excellent corrosion resistance? Again, read the source book that I mentioned above to fully understand the uses of AL-6XN.

The reason is that the inside of a vessel requires AL-6XN, however, the CS is an exterior item which corrosion is not a concern. I am aware of the uses of AL-6XN, however,not whether it is acceptable to weld CS to the exterior.

If you are welding to the 'back side' in a corrosion application you will need to qualify the weld both mechanically and from a corrosion resistance standpoint. Even just a bit of heat tint on the other side of the material will significantly lower the corrosion resistance, and you cannot remove it mechanically.

AL-6XN can be readily welded to carbon steel using NiCrFe or NiCrMo-3, -4, -10 etc. filler metals. If AL-6XN is thin, advise welding with pulsed transfer, GMAW (low heat input)using Ar-He gas mixtures or applying an inert gas backing to the process side surface of the AL-6XN to mitigate the heat tinting described by Ed. Heat tint can also be removed by pickling.
