I'm going to a site that has an air actuated slide gate tomorrow. The gate has a lubricator on it and the manual says to ensure that there is enough lubricant present. But, it doesn't say what to use as lubricant. I assume some type of oil, but can anyone help me out further?

Our vendor is closed for the weekend so I cannot contact him directly.

Personally I'm a great believer in any type of oil / grease is better than no oil/ grease. However having said that, if the system is pneumatic, and I couldnt determine the recommended oils, I would avoid regular motor oil/ hydrocarbon oils as they can cause dieselling in the wrong usage. We use heavy rock drill oil in our pnematic drills underground which is designed to stick to metal parts and not be readily displaced by large volumes of compressed air. Conversely there are special light weight oils available for lighter, more delicate pneumatic systems. And theres also canola based oils which are environmentally friendly with less risks if they leak etc.

Unless you can determine approx what you are looking for, its tough to make recommendations.

Could you come back with what component is being lubricated?

Here is what we use.
We have numerous slide gate valves that use both grease and
oil. The ones that use oil we normally use a 100 sec water resistant oil. The grease we use is an NLG2 again we use a water resistant grease.

We use Lubrication Products for all conditions where moisture might be problem,

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. I'm not really sure what other information to give here. This is to be used in the air cylinder, not on the actual gate portion.

It's a Meyer slide gate.

If you need to operate the cylinder prior to contacting the factory you can use a standard air cylinder/tool oil. This can be purchased at big box store or a mill supply house.
