Can anyone explain, or does anyone have a good reference for explaining the AFNOR steel designation system?

We recently replaced a specified CD4MCu part with CD6Mn, and had to certify compatibility. We now want to have a better understanding of all the steel naming/numbering systems, but AFNOR is proving difficult to learn about.
