Figured it might be nice to have one of the early threads be a repository for general design tips/guides so that in future folks with a question can either look at it or get directed to it (maybe even become a FAQ).
First I guess let's define what I'm talking about by "Additive Manufacturing" for anyone not familiar with the term. If my Google Fu is strong then it appears that:
So it would cover what in the press has become popularly known as '3D Printing'. Additive Manufacturing is also covered by the term 'Rapid Prototyping/Manufacturing' though that term is also sometimes used for other process that get parts quicker than more conventional manufacturing processes (Silicon Mold Cast Urethane, RIM, High Speed quick turn machining, Rubber Plaster Mold Casting...).
Specifically processes I take the term Additive Manufacturing to apply to include Fused deposition modeling (FDM); Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS); Selective laser sintering (SLS) and Stereolithography (SLA). Wikipedia has a more exhaustive list and may well be missing some.
As to the design tips our vendor has a section on their website with some information in particular they have an FDM design guide.
For those not lucky enough to have your own machines in house or even on your desktop a while back I found this guide for reducing costs on StereoLithography (of course may also be of some interest even if you own your own machine):
They also have some other posts which may be of interest. The November 2011 thru April 2012 posts are a series of FAQ's.
