Hello,
I am seeking information about an Acoustic FEA problem. I want to simulate a sound wave traveling into a group of very thin vertical columns (actually polymer fibers). These fibers are what you would find in something like a carpet. I would only model 3 or 4 fibers to start with. I need to see if the sound wave is absorbed by the fibers or if the sound wave is slowed down by interation with the fibers. I will later change the diameter of the fibers to see that effect. I am attaching a jpeg to illustrate this problem. Some things I need to know include; what FEA software could do this simulation, is this feasible, should I use ALE methods? Thanks in advance.

There are a lot of parameters that affect this:
> density of fiber positions
> density of fibers
> structural parameters of fibers
> wavelength of the sound

Is this for school?

No, I am a CAE engineer (BSME, MSME)at an automotive supplier. We manufacture adhesives and sound deading material.

I would think that FEA is a bit of an over-reach for something like this. Trying to model individual fibers in a rug or mat is a lot of crunching for very little benefit, since the net properties of the material is only partially driven by the individual fibers of that material.

What are the other contributing factors? Any information is appreciated.
