I have always used the punching shear calc to determine how much breakout strength concrete has when a Anchor Bolt is in tension...(4)(f'c^.5) ( projected area of a cone)

the 2002 Aci has appendix D there the breakout strength is alot less then that...for example a single cast in place bolt with a 12" embedment with full failure area is about 68 kips.....if punching were used it is good for about 99 kips...

Any comments?

Appendix D has changed design theories. It now uses a pyamidal shape (instead of cone shaped) with a slope or 35 degrees.
