not my forte

i am not that familiar with structural welds but, doesn't AWS D1.1 & D1.6 call for welds to have the scale cleaned off and wire brushed?

also isn't weld spatter to be kept to a minumum under best practices?

just curious, after seeing some welds that look worse than when i used a coat hanger to weld my muffler back on when i was a teenager!

tia for any insight

an excess of splatter can be the cause of many other problems. you should take a look if it is a part of your job? ex. too much voltage if you using a gmaw process or no gas of protecton in that case your facing a serius problem of poor mecanical properties , to much wire feed can cause also a poor visual result of the filet weld but one thing is sure the person who hold the gun need to be upgrade . if you using smaw your having an excess of amp.

To answer your question, yes, welds are to be slagged and wire brushed. Paragraph 5.30.2 of D1.1-2004.
