is it possible to open abaqus files in older versions of abaqus. In particular, 6.12 files in 6.10??

Input files yes, CAE and ODB files no.
As long as the model from the newer version doesn't use any functions/features that were not available in the older version you should be able to open the .inp file but I don't think there is a away to open a .cae file that was created in a newer version.
