I know that I am not the sharpest guy with the AASHTO code, but I am really missing the boat here somewhere.

I am trying to use the Strength Design (LFD) provisions of the 2002 code to check a large diagonal brace in a bridge bent. It can experience 230 kips of tension or compression. Section 10.54 is easy enough for checking compression, but where are the tension checks? For ASD, the allowable tension stresses are right in the table. Where are the provisions for checking yield on gross and fracture on net for LFD?

PS, I would use ASD if I could but that is outside of my control.

Thanks

Typical AASHTO - never clear. Go to 10.4;2 it refers back to ASD in terms of serviceability etc. The truss and tension member provisions are also in the ASD section. Here's where it gets screwy:

There's an AASHTO Guide Spec from 1985 on LFD truss design, which you probably need. It's the ASD provisions with some revisions.

If you can reference a newer version of AASHTO like 2008 or 2010 it is spelled out a little better.
