I have been using SolidMap for over two weeks now and it helps me a lot understanding mate relationships.

They have just released a new version that allows viewing external references.
If there are circular references present they highlight them and show you for each part to what circle it belongs.
It also tells you how many circles there are all together.

If any one is trying to figure out circular references I recommend you try SolidMap.

I would recommend not ever creating them in the first place.

You are right, but I'm dealing with assemblies that come from all over the place, and I need to make changes.

I can see how this would be very handy to someone having to work with files that they didn't create and wanted to maintain references. If I was dealing with a complex top down design assembly(s) that I didn't create on a day to day where I wanted to maintain all in context references and make edits at the part and assem level, I would definately want a tool like this to quickly understand the design flow.
