Here is what seem to be the best...a central PLC with lots of smaller remote I/O racks scatter around at the various places around the plant. From closest to furtherest it's about 1500'

Can you get a small remote PLC that would fit in a 24" x 20" X 8" box. It should talk to the main. At each of 40 locations there will be about about 4 digital inputs and a couple of analog inputs. Can this be done? I'm thinking each of these would connect via RS485 or fiber to an Ethenet switch. This is for monitoring only.

Turck has a programmable unit that can do exactly what you are requesting. They have an IP20 version that is very small and can communicate Modbus TCP to the main PLC. They can also communicate EIP as well. The IO is modular so you can select the IO combinations that you need. The BL20-PG-EN product is what you are looking for. That way they can be located where ever you need them for the local control.
