I am looking for a good general use book on welding. I do not do alot of specifications for welding, but when I do I need a good reference book for symbols, material compatability, types of filler material, etc. Can anyone provide some good "desktop" references?

Thanks, aumechengr

I like the books from Lincoln Electric that are published through the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio.

My favorite book is the Design of Welded Structures. But that deals with the stresses and design of structures, not exactly what you're looking for. But they do have a Metals and How to Weld Them for $5US, Weight of Weld Metal Tables for $2US, and a GTAW Guide Book for $5US.

My other recommendations are the same as stan4419 to find standards: AWS 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 (there are probably others). Or you can download MIL-STD-2219 for free from

Try the Weld_It Calculator. It explains all about welding, symbols, definitions, type. It calculates the strengths of various welds with different rods/bases.

It's by the Canadian Welding Bureau in Mississauga Ontario. Very useful.

it's at the top called Weld_IT for purchase on CD's
