Any suggestions on double butt welding a 50' tank bottom.
I had planned to put it on cribbing, but they the bottom shell ring would need to be welded to the supported bottom to weld out the corner weld and make the bottom closing seam to minimize buckling.

Are there any better ideas?

Thanks

Why not lap weld?

If you have to butt weld the entire bottom why not just using backing bars and weld the plates on the ground?

If cranes are available you could build the bottom in halves and flip it over for welding on back side. Final closure weld could be with a backing bar across the tank bottom along its centerline.

Thanks guys but it is what it is - double butt welded and no other way is acceptable. No laps and no backing bars allowed. It looks like the cribbing method is the only alternative.

I've seen that done as double butt weld. The two halves were completed first (ie, each flipped over for back welding). After the long seam was welded across the diameter the entire bottom was flipped over and back welded. Again, you obviously need a crane.
