This sounds like a broad question, and this may not fall into the research category, but how about "Industrial Archeology"? .

Many of the wonderful objects from our industrial past no longer exist, so using a computer to create “virtual reconstructions” has assumed an important role in museums and publications, and with galleries and collectors.
