just installed 2006, and it works all right, but the graphics performance is down at least 50%. Anyone experienced this? The settings are the same as for 2005. This seems to be the problem for all the later versions of SW, serious degradation in performance every time. Tried installing the newest approved drivers (listed on the nvidia site as approved at least) but no difference in performance. Any tips and tricks out there?
Best regards, Mindnumb.

What was your process of install for the drivers?

I have a process that seems to be much better and it's not very time consuming or hard to do.

1) Uninstall all drivers
2) Reboot
3) Install latest Certifed driver for your Card
4) Reboot
5) Test

IF you are still seeing performance lost, then I am sure there maybe something else causing this. Such as TEMP file to large, etc... check out the FAQ for futher options of the possible problem.

Also test your files out on another system - If you don't have one there, contact your VAR and have them test the file.

I noticed a slowdown when solidworks started using (more?) textures, but from 2004 to 2005 and from 2005 to 2006 I noticed no real slowdown (using ati cards as well).
Maybe your video card settings changed? For instance FSAA can really slow SW down...

hehe, sorry!

FSAA: "Full Screen Anti Aliassing"
AF: "Anisotropic Filtering"
Both have a severe impact on your 3D performance

I use an FX-500 and noticed similar (but not 50%) performance loss. The best thing I did was found the setting in Options to display dimensions horizontally only--like in previous SW versions. I noticed SW 2006 will display dimensions along their respective planes, and that (for some reason) was really hindering my graphics response. Toggle it back to normal and I think you'll see a gain in performance.

So would it be fair to say that 2006 is a little more picky about graphics cards than 2005?

It would be more accurate to say it's more demanding. Whether it's more picky can be seen by checking the SW web site and seeing whether cards accepted by 2005 are rejected or have problems (comments) with 2006.

I began to notice performance issues with my FX-500 when I began using larger and larger assemblies. This has been an increasing factor that 2006 clarified. So I'll upgrade the graphics card along with the processor and RAM on my next system build.

Hey, if the software is increasingly capable of providing more, it will certainly do so at the expense of hardware to match. This isn't MS Word--you can build anything you want with this software. Ten years ago, the smallest CPU box I'd ever seen do something like this was the size of a small refrigerator and cost $120K to set up. I'd say we're better than par for the course.

Thanks for all the responses ! I have been off sick so I have not been able to test all the tips yet.
And to your information: my system setup is as follows:

pentium4 3,2ghz , 2 Gig ECC Ram, Quadro fx1000 graphics card.

2 Sata disks on separate controller in Raid-0.
