I recently received a gear drawing from overseas. The material callout is 18NcD5. I have never seen anything in this form and have no idea of where to even start. Matweb and Google offer nothing. I need to find an equivalent material for base forging of the part here in the US. Can anyone spin me around and point me in the right direction?

It appears to be a French steel designation. ASM Atlas of Time-Temperature Diagrams for Iron and STeel doesn't have that exact composition, it does list 18 NCD 6 and 18 NCD 4 though.

I agree with pwtomlin-- it uses the French AFNOR designation system, but I assume there is a mistake somewhere. A common case hardening steel for gears is 17NiCrMo6-4 (1.6566) according to NF EN 10084. This was formerly known as 18NCD6 in one of the AFNOR standards. It is similar to SAE 4320, but not close enough to call it equivalent.
