Good day to all,
Recently I had visited a power plant abroad USA to survey winding conditions for 8.1MW 13.8KV
During my inspection noticed that generator's power cables are not grounded at generator's junction box.
Power cables are only grounded ay substation switch board!
Will someone please revert if this is correct?
So far I have never witness medium voltage power cables connecting the generator and MSB, to have only one end grounded

Kind regards
ermioni

So you are saying the cables that run from the generator junction box to a remote switchboard are grounded only at one the remote switchboard end?

I agree that is not correct. There should be stress cone at both ends with shield of stress cone connected to ground.

Dear electripete,
Much appreciated your prompt feed back,
the answer is YES only on site is grounded on the power cables and that is at Main Sitch board, but not generator site,
will it be possible to elaborate bit details so I can revert to the client,
also see attached photos with damaged end boot terminations
Sincerely
ermioni

Details... you mean like a reference? I don't have one handy but I can look later if no-one else comes up with one.

The photo you attached was the generator lead (not the cable from generator to remote panel), right? Was there a question about the photo?

Hi electripete,
these are the single contactor cables from generator's junction box to main switch board.
One conductor per phase!
Thank you

So there is no stress cone at the termination of the shield? That would be a problem.

I’m assuming what you’re showing is a shielded cable with no stress cone at the termination.

The stress cone has a purpose – to reduce stress concentration which would otherwise occur at abrupt interruption of the shield. Without it, I guess this is what you get.

Here is a reference:
NEC said:
300.40 Insulation Shielding
Metallic and semiconducting insulation shielding components of shielded cables shall be removed for a distance dependent on the circuit voltage and insulation. Stress reduction
means shall be provided at all terminations of factory applied shielding.
