How does 12V SMPS work for outdoor surveillance cameras? A typical camera is the Clover CL-501SNH for which it advertises a 12V SMPS. Does this mean that the camera has an onboard battery like my personal video camera and it requires DC current to charge (ostensibly from an AC source)?

Or does it mean that that these surveillance cameras run from a DC on-board motor (for panning, tilting, etc.) that the SMPS modulates from 110 VAC down to 12V DC for power?

I've talked to 3 of these camera "representatives" who don't know anything about SMPS, other than how to spell it. And one of them spelled it wrong.

Thanks,

What's there to know? The SMPS converts AC to DC and supplies power to run the camera.

SMPS - switched mode power supply. It just provides (in your case) 12V DC from a 110V AC supply. The significant thing about SMPS as opposed to linears is their low weight, small size, high efficiency, and in recent years, low cost.

Which bits of the apparatus use 110V AC and which bits use 12V DC is anyone's guess.

There are no bits that run from 110 on these types of cameras

The window demist heater - typically a 50W wirewound resistor - certainly runs on relatively high voltage in some brands of enclosure. I've seen one supplied at 240V: that was a nasty surprise for me. I was working at a summer job in the security camera installation industry while at college. I distinctly remember being told it was all 12V by someone.

In our camera enclosures we'll use 120/240V heaters, but the camera itself will only use 12/24V. I can't say I've ever run across a camera (encosure not included) that uses anything other...

Didn't realize they were that brute-force.

Our EO systems uses a gridded window heater that runs off the same 28 Vdc that the rest of the system uses.
