Following off Travis, it would appear to be 8.6.2.2.1 (a) "Combustible Unobstructed with exposed members greater than 3' O.C." and also with a sloped ceiling so don't forget your 30% design are increase.
Fully agree with SprinklerDesigner2, check their approvals from AHJ and their submitted shop drawings and if they do not show the varied sprinkler temps that were installed, request they follow the documents.
I'm only a layout technician, but this is something we would never do within our company.
Thank you all for the suggestions. Chevy you hit the nail on the head. I have a telescopic pole for doing surveys and now I just need to make a little adapter for thread on the bottom half of a split ring. I'll post pics of the final product when I finish. Thank you for the help again everyone.
I've been working in the industry for 8 years now, and still I have not found a good way to confirm pipe sizes on existing buildings in instances where say the deck is 30' up. Eyeballing it is not good enough and throwing a 100' tape over it and measuring is only a semi accurate method. Where I...
NFPA 13 2013 8.2
8.2.1 The maximum floor area on any one floor to be protected by sprinklers supplied by any one sprinkler system riser or combined system riser shall be as follows:
(1) Light hazard - 52,000 sq ft.
(2) Ordinary hazard - 52,000 sq. ft.
(3) Extra hazard - Hydraulically calculated...
Sdpaddler50,
Thank you, I had assumed the same, but the owner asked as he does not wish to erect the draft curtain.
As for the building height the building is only 30'-7" at it's peak, the 49'10" gap is the piece of wall missing, I've attached an image to give better detail on the situation...
A question has been posed at an existing manufacturing building, half the building is being converted into storage under an ESFR system. Both systems are divided by a full height wall except at a 49'-10" section. As per NFPA 13 2010 8.4.6.4.1 "Where ESFR sprinkler systems are installed adjacent...
Thank you all, this is exactly what we were looking for. We've replied to the engineer with this information and also sent a request to NFPA to confirm this for us. Appreciate the quick responses and all your help.
Jon
Travis,
That is exactly what the engineer is claiming, that the ceiling constitutes the one side.
NFPA 13 2010 8.15.1.5
NFPA 13 2010 8.15.23
Is there a code in IBC, IFC, or NFPA we can give back to him to disprove his point?
The work is done in Des Moines, IA USA
Thank you,
Jon
Dale,
From your description the way to figure the area is a simple matter in most cases. I've attached a drawing to give an example, each shaded area is a shadow created from spray pattern in the bathroom. To calculate their area is a simple matter of figuring the area of a triangle...
Our design chief has run into a situation that we'd appreciate some advice on.
"A small mechanical room 6'-2" X 10'-2" w/ no ceiling & walls to 9'-6" aff. Concrete deck on concrete joists bot. @ 15'-7". Surrounded by corridors & rooms w/ ACT, or gyp. bd. ceilings, no combustibles above. Will...
We have an AHJ here in Iowa that requires the uprights left in place within the mall of his jurisdiction. He has required this for protection of the space during construction and there were issues with seasonal stores taking down ceiling tiles to accommodate their own needs. When we designed the...
Perhaps try an Air Gap? When we had a similar situation we had an engineer rule that a 2'-0" long piece of 8" was to be placed before the 6" building drain. We then placed our 2" main drain 1'-0" down into this 8" perhaps check with your plumber or engineer about this. Might work for this...
Here is a shot from Google maps of the completed site.

CDAFD,
There are two buildings in the shot, the nearly complete building to the left of the shot had a 1500 GPM, 120 PSI Variable Frequency Drive pump we installed. The building to the right they chose not to connect to the fire-pump and it was a semi-heated parking garage 11 stories high. This...
We had the Fire Dept. bring the truck to the site and test the standpipes, they did charge us but the building owner covered this cost.
I've attached a shot of the building we had this situation on just for reference.
Thanks...
ForeverStudent,
This may not be your answer but it could lead you to it. In a similar situation here on a building I had to do the calcs with the water source being the local Fire Depts pumper truck, to prove that when they brought the truck up to the building and connected that the standpipe...
This is not a confirmation that you can use one, but as to CDAFD's remark, would it be possible to put a check va. after the pump but before the relief piping it joined as to prevent the water from going from one pump right to the other?
Attached is a PDF copy of the 2 areas in question. http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=a185b12f-dfce-4ff0-84d8-5a30629056b2&file=Obstucted_Construction.pdf
