Water Line Specification for 3-Way Fire Hydrants

In a project I'm working on I have preliminarily specified a 3-Way Fire Hydrant rated at 250 psig max working pressure and 500 psig static test pressure. I have specified this because the county has a fire engine. The line in the system is currently SDR 26 PVC and rated for 160 psig. Could...

Learning source for sizing HVAC units?

I want to figure the right size unit for a commercial building based on geographic location, square footage, windows, insulation type..etc.

Learning source for sizing HVAC units?

What is a good source of learning for engineering design of HVAC units? Thanks.

Construction of commercial bldg. framing and roof design

no that is not specified. only thing that is specified is: "metal roofing" "wooden trusses" "8" CMU walls" Etc. Very vague, leaving the design up to the contractor. I'm only checking what the owner is specifying to the contractor.

Construction of commercial bldg. framing and roof design

26 Ga. metal roofing roof slope is 6/12. wood trusses cmu block wall sheathing is the same as roof decking? could i use a steel deck with wood trusses and metal roof?

Construction of commercial bldg. framing and roof design

Are commercial buildings typically designed to have 8" CMU load bearing block walls, wooden trusses, with a metal roof? I'm no structural engineer or construction guy, but this sounds kind of fishy to me. Is CMU block sufficient for lateral and compression loading? Is wooden trusses with a...

Sizing an HVAC unit for commercial building

Thanks guys ive figured it out. Gonna calc it by hand. It's simple.

Sizing an HVAC unit for commercial building

Yes this type of gas station will have a fast food joint inside. No bays and/or garages. Just a convenience store / fast food joint with big windows and pumps outside.

Sizing an HVAC unit for commercial building

sspeare, Since I posted the original thread, I've decided to do what you suggested and manually calculate the heat gains and size the units by hand. It hasn't been too difficult so far, but I would like a good reference book for help. Your recommendation is appreciated!

Sizing an HVAC unit for commercial building

Are there any free ones available for download that you know of?

Sizing an HVAC unit for commercial building

I'm looking into sizing an HVAC unit for a gas station. Is the Manual J method the best way to properly size the unit? I hear that 'rules of thumb' methods typically oversize the system which causes excessive cycling and improper performance.

    Calculating Torque on Clutch

I am looking at installing an 'anti-reverse rotation' clutch on the fan shaft. The purpose is to prevent the shaft from rotating backwards. The cause of reverse rotation is the wind. The clutch is said to be rated for 829 ft-lbs. What sort of calculation do I need to do to verify that this...

    Justification for cutting through rebar

Correct this is a cable pullbox NOT a nuclear pressure vessel or containment or anything which houses anything nuclear/radiation related. Structural engineer did a calc and determined it was acceptable to core drill a 4" hole through some rebar. Work was delayed so a calc was needed in a hurry...

    Justification for cutting through rebar

I appreciate all of your input. A structural engineer is on it!

    Justification for cutting through rebar

I agree with you guys, I'm actually mechanical havent changed my info. I do work at a nuclear plant and most definitley will involve a structural engineer here, but was just trying to get this calculation going on my own today, I like to get ahead of the game sometimes. Thanks for the replies...

    Justification for cutting through rebar

I agree the wall is loaded. It's an underground pullbox, basically it's a concrete rectangle of rebar/concrete, all underground except the top is open. My question is, what is a calculation I can use to check the impact of cutting the rebar?

    Justification for cutting through rebar

yes basically. i am anticipating that they will have to cut through rebar.

    Justification for cutting through rebar

I have to write up a calculation which justifies cutting through rebar in a underground concrete wall which is a part of a pullbox which houses underground cables. Basically we're making a 4" diameter core drill and cannot avoid cutting through horizontal and vertical rebar. The rebar is 1"...

Compression Valves/Fittings for Pressurized Oil System?

Thanks for the replies everyone. There are seven valves in this run of piping, a backpressure relief valve, check valve, and several needle valves for bypass, isolation, and pressure gauges. Sounds like compression fittings is the way to go since I want to design this system mainly for...
