    Antifreeze Systems

I used to have a chart for different pipe sizes, but the following formula will do it for any size: .04079905 x d^2 = Gallons per foot (d = internal pipe diameter) There are pipe dimensions for different schedule pipe in the Annex of NFPA 13. In 2007 edition it is Table A.6.3.2.

Fire Extinguisher hung inside Wall Cabinets/Boxs

I'm interested if there is a specific standard reference for this myself. Every cabinet we have ever provided we just rest the extinguisher on the bottom of the cabinet. The vast majority of existing cabinets I've seen do the same, but a small percentage have had the extinguishers hanging on...

    Glass stairwell wall protection

The building is two stories plus a basement. The stairs in question go only from the first to the second floor. It is similar to an entry foyer in a house (somewhat of an open stairway), but all surrounding rooms/corridors on each floor are separated by either standard stud/drywall walls or...

    Glass stairwell wall protection

thread184-215775 I found the above thread asking the same question but wanted to get a bit more information on it. The stairwell is only between the first and second floor of a building, and it's not a standard "stairwell." On the first floor it opens up to a larger entry area. Some of the...

Travis, question for you, RE: 11.2k+ in Storage Applications

...now I really need to slap myself around. I've not only used that sprinkler in the past, but even just recently used it in a preliminary design. Those instances either were using existing 3/4" outlets or was a new installation so it wouldn't have made a huge difference, but the fact that I'm...

Travis, question for you, RE: 11.2k+ in Storage Applications

Travis, I actually have never seen a 1/2" 11.2k for use with density/area designs before. I've used a 1/2" 11.2k Large Drop from Viking a couple times now, but the pressure requirements of the large drop don't always make it the best option. I'll have to look around a bit more for other brands...

Travis, question for you, RE: 11.2k+ in Storage Applications

Beyond the worry of actually designing and installing something that doesn't meet the standard, part of me isn't feeling well about the reduced protection we've installed a few places. It meets the adopted code and NFPA edition required, but that's only because the municipality is slow to...

Travis, question for you, RE: 11.2k+ in Storage Applications

I was going to reply in the other thread but it seemed like it might get lost in the shuffle of the "code memorization" topic. Was section 12.6 detailing the K-factors in storage applications new in the 2007 edition? I have the 2007 and 2010 (and 1999) editions, but we somehow lost the 2002...

Small room rule in NFPA 13, 1994 Edition?

Dealing with a city that is still on the '94 edition. Thanks for checking!

Small room rule in NFPA 13, 1994 Edition?

Does anyone have a 1994 edition of NFPA 13 handy (or does anyone know by memory) to check whether the small room rule was in effect at that time?

Looking for code reference (for tank capacity of 13D system)

Thanks for the replies! I ended up using the 13D 2010 reference since it was a 13D design. A smaller tank was approved and it will fit well in the smaller space.

    Shall vs. Should (Clarification)

Just curious, but does code require that these official terms like should or shall be used on an inspection report in the first place? For instance if I inspected a building where a closet does not have a sprinkler, is it not acceptable to put in the recommendation section: "Provide sprinkler...

Looking for code reference (for tank capacity of 13D system)

Two smaller tanks or one larger tank will likely take up about the same floor area which is the main problem. I could have sworn that once upon a time I read about adding fill flow to the capacity, but perhaps it was just a discussion and not in an actual code.

Looking for code reference (for tank capacity of 13D system)

I've heard that the tank size for a 13D system can be reduced depending on the flow of the fill valve/domestic capacity. I've always designed the tank size for the full capacity since there has always been room for a larger tank. Now I'm dealing with a smaller home with a fairly small...
