PWHT repair of SS overlay on P5A material?

Thanks to both of you for the quick responses. We have made a mock-up plate and machined the overlay so that it tapers from about 3/16" thick at one end of the plate down to nothing at the other end of the plate. We then ran beads of SS down the length of the plate using varying size...

PWHT repair of SS overlay on P5A material?

40 year old vessel is 6.5" thick SA387-D (2.25Cr) weld overlayed with 0.125" minimum 309Cb (first pass) + 347 SS. SS tray support ring is welded to the overlay (not to the base metal). Attachment fillet welds have toe cracks and transverse cracks in weld metal. If we decide to remove the...

    Keep razor blades sharp

Metalguy, Interesting experiment. One more variable to consider though - does crevice corrosion/underdeposit corrosion contribute to failure? It seems that no matter how long I rinse the blades or how hard I shake them I still end up with whiskers trapped between the blades (I use Atra blades...

    Keep razor blades sharp

Cathodic protection may not be such a good idea. Since the blades are SS, you might push the potential from the passive range into the active range and end up with higher corrosion rates. However, if someone wants to try CP, why not couple the blade to a strip of zinc instead of messing with...

    API PIPE TO ASME VESSEL

I don't think you can. I could not find any API 5L materials in Section IID allowable stress tables. However, if your vessel is small enough, it may be outside the scope of Section VIII. See U-1 for limits.
