How tolerant is your company of wrong answers?

    * Do not make assumptions. * Any time you find out an error, document it in your personal notes so that the next time, at least it is not the same kind of error you get busted for. * If your hand claculations don't match the FEA results then find out why? * All the data (material properties etc)...

    Keep career on track

If you made friends at your first job then you can do so here too. See if anyone there has interesting work and offer to help. Stay busy with office work or with personal projects. This is the best time for you to perform well and do something more than expected. A little appreciation from your...

    The Corporate Gears to fight

To those who have mentioned getting a good raise when they jumped to different companies, was it the same industry, similar job responsibilities? Thanks ysm

    Path to an Executive Position

What about a higher degree in Engineering Management or Systems Engineering? I have seen many high level officials especially in govt with degrees in one of these. With the same amount of experience they are placed higher than the guys who have PhDs in "regular" engineering (Mechanical...

    3 years unemployment

While you have time on your hands, it might not be a bad idea to learn or improve your programming skills (C++, LabView, Matlab etc). An engineer with programming skills is always desired. My friend used to say "He who knows C++ will not die of starvation" :)

    3 years unemployment

unemployedengineer, One thing that the PhD will do is buy you some more time. But keep looking for jobs during your PhD. Also, try and reflect back on your interviews and write down what you could have said better. Do you talk too much or too little during the interview. Do some research on the...

How to break into a new industry?

GregLocock, thanks for the pointers. Yes all my FEA is validated by hand calculation as well as actual testing. I only hope that the interviewers ask me these things or let me steer the conversation towards these points. Thanks ysm

How to break into a new industry?

I was interviewed for a position with an automotive engineering company. The work would mainly be of CAE. At the company that I have been working for the past 9 yrs, I have used Pro/Mechanica. I have however tried and gotten familiar with Abaqus and Nastran through some moonlighting work I did...

Have you ever considered becoming a high school teacher?

I tutor an 8th grader. He had agreed reluctantly for the tutoring. He thought he was good enough in science and math and doesn't really need a tutor. I said "fine, if you think you are smart then figure out a simple math puzzle". I boasted that i had figured it out when I was his age. "If you...

How to break into a new industry?

I have been working with a small Aerospace industry. I started looking for jobs in bigger companies in the auto industry. Correct me if I am wrong here, I found out that they are very software driven. If one does not have lot of experience using a specific software then it seems like there is no...

    volume regions and elastoplatic analysis

ozzkoz, Is it possible that your volume region is going beyond the material (by a very small amount) and hence that part of the volume region is not associated with material and its properties?

    volume regions and elastoplatic analysis

I set the same max element size in the volume and it went through fine.

    volume regions and elastoplatic analysis

Yes i have seen those two problems in WF5.0 after an analysis it refuses to show the results window. it works if i go to "Display Definition(s) from selection" icon and select the window, then the results window shows up. Also, are you using any autogem setting on the volume region. If you...

    volume regions and elastoplatic analysis

I just tried a simple bracket and it works. I am not sure how complicated your model is. I created a bracket and performed a non-linear analysis (without a vol region) Then added a volume region along the radius and performed another non-linear analysis and it went through fine.

    volume regions and elastoplatic analysis

You probably have already done this but just in case... As a check can you cut away everything else except the volume region and run a simple analysis to see if it accepts material properties.

    volume regions and elastoplatic analysis

One way to refine mesh is using datum points. Create datum points around the area of interest. Make sure the datum points are not collinear. HTH ysm

    ProE Mechanical Memory Allocation

It all comes down to "How fast is fast". I have a system running on Win XP with a clock speed of 2.4 GHtz It has 2 gigs RAM. I run static structural analyses with 13000-160000 elements, 6th order poly. Sometimes to save time I create several analyses and run them as batch files overnight. I...

osty, Just curious, how many elements and what poly order are you using. Thanks ysm
