Just came out of the Shipyard with a brand new drillship and DNV has a Clean Class which basically means all rainwater goes into a tank with a 10m3/hr Oily Water Separator.
This is of course not enough to handle the massive amount of rain and we are wondering if there is a legal way to deviate...

Common and expected on railroad axles.
Interesting to hear about your similar experience.
Do you have any reference on this I can?
I personally don't think it is a problem but I need something to back it up with.
I am inspecting an Oilfield Triplex piston Mud pump and the Pinion shaft has two Self Aligning Roller Bearings (1 ea end).
Approx. diam 460mm. Max clearance as per spec is 0,040-0,1092mm between housing and Bearing OD, I.E. no interference fit. Max Pinion speed 417 RPM
During testing it was...
Our brand new vessel just left the yard.
According to ILO the bathrooms should have "Towel dryers".
Our Client interprets this as the electrically heated version, while I interpret is as a Towel Rail where towels will dry without heat.
I have never seen an electrical towel dryer on a ship or...

I've come to the conclusion that the water is within the parameter and that we just have to live with the fact that RO water is aggressive. This seems to be the problem on many ships and offshore rigs.
If that is true, we need to replace our carbon steel pipe and install something else. I...
Mixing with diesel makes sense. Is there any special pocess that needs doing? Like mixing it in some sort of blender to stop them settling out?

Regarding the temperature. What temperature should I aim for:
30-50, 50-70, 70-90 degrees Celcius? Just to get a rough idea.
Not sure what...
Dear All
Asked a few days ago on how to get a hold of Ethanol powered motorbike engines.
Today I would like to know if I can run an old diesel engine on Palm oil (in Africa).
It is my understanding that it might be difficult to do this in colder climates, but are there other challenges I might...

I think the idea is for them to use the Ethanol they produce themselves. It's part of the deal to make them less dependent on purchasing fuel and shipping it out to the countryside.
But thanks for the tip.
TrackRat
My mistake, It should read Ethanol (alcohol). Now, how can I correct my headline?
Thanks for your input. I see that the Specific Energy is much lower, so like you say, they will never be very fuel efficient.

Dear all
A friend of mine is looking for Motorbike engines that can be ran on methanol. Not sure what the biggest difference is between Petrol and Methanol four stroke engines.
The guy is running a project in Africa and the people there can produce methanol whereas Petrol is horribly...
Thank you Bimr
We do use a mineralizing filter that uses 50/50 Calcite and Corosex.
The pH is higher than I first mentioned between 8-8.5.
We inject a corrosion inhibitor after the mineralizer, but it still not very friendly.
We have installed a carbon filter to clean up the water, but as you...

Our Ocean going vessel uses Reverse Osmosis to make drinking water out of Sea Water. Great machine, much less maintenance than the old Evaporator Distillers. However, although the water is very clean, it gets very aggressive and corrodes Steel Pipes, Aluminium coolers, Coffee machines...
This is the answer I got from my boss:
'½” BSPP Gauge Connection, Bottom Entry (all BSPP gauge connections come with the spigot)'
Was it really that easy?
Unclesyd
It is not a quick connection. I see that the photo I uploaded is not so good, but it is threaded 14 TPI with a boss with an O-ring at the end.
I have seen this on pressure gauges before, but do not know what it is called.

That would make sence, the shipyard that build the vessel might have altered/replaced the label.
Measuring the valve is not so easy right now, as it is mounted on the sea chest. I could do it, but we would sink then.
Will get some divers to plug it and take the measurements.
All your...

I will check marineengineering for further details.
Please clarify a few of your inputs for me:
What does SPS stand for? Special Survey?
The last section about hoop stress. Could you expand a little, this is new to me.
What does FOS stand for?

I am about to order a new pressure gauge for our hydrailc bolt stretching tool.
The thread is 14 TPI
OD 0.82" (20.9mm)
but at the end there is a smaller cylindrical bit with an o-ring around it measuring:
OD 0.23" (6.0mm)
Length 0.19" (4.8 mm)
This to me is an G 1/2" or 1/2" BSPP, but...
