Here's how I've approached the problem so far. Using the gasket dimensions for the plug header I calculated the gasket surface area. Since the gaskets are soft iron flat metal gaskets I used a target bolt stress of 18,000 psi. I multiplied the target stress by the surface area of the gasket...
All,
I have been asked to provide a torque value for an air-cooled heat exchanger's plugs. Thus far I have not had much exposure to air-cooled heat exchangers. We have internal company standards that specify header plug torque values but the table in our standard does not utilize the same k...
Common practice is to replace the area. As far as determining the size of the area allowed for removal one method I have used in the past is found in EN13445-3. I believe that is the method that Coade's PVElite uses as well.

I have not personally seen this done but it doesn't appear that the code prohibits this type of construction.
If you haven't started looking already, you should pick up a copy of the code and start reading at UG-7.
Per ASME Section VIII Div 1: UG-7 CASTINGS
Cast material may be used in the...
I like your reinforcement method; however, I am really unsure of the soundness of the floor plate. The chime is a wreck and I'm sure the plate exhibits the typical "knife-edge" look if the scale was removed. This tank is a critical one to the operation of the unit and I would be in a tough...
All,
I have a 50' x 36' carbon steel tank in water service that was built to API 650. The tank has experienced severe cooling tower overspray corrosion. The area that has seen the most damage is the critical shell to annular ring (chime) weld. Not only is the shell and weld severely pitted...
Thank you all for the responses especially you unclesyd. I contacted one of the companies you referenced (fibatech) and here is the result:
- The tube was manufactured by National Tube in 1948. ( Their mark is the circled N)
- It was assigned serial number 6046.
- There are no markings to...
I have been a long time reader but this is my first post. I really appreciate what you all do here at eng-tips. I have been a refinery engineer for almost 2.5 years now and I have used this site to get me going several times. I agree that it is not an ASME stamp. I suspect because of the...
We currently have a pressure vessel on our site with an H stamp inside a shield. There is also an N with a circle around it.
There is not a lot of additional information on the stamping. (See attached picture)
What code is indicated by this stamp if any?
The vessel specs are as follows:
No...
