The fix was under TOOLS, OPTIONS, SYSTEM OPTIONS, EXTERNAL REFERENCES. I unchecked “Search file locations for external references”.
That one fix made assemblies load 3 to 10 times faster.

But I was able to get what I needed by doing a couple tube sweeps with the same guide curves. I used the old IDs for my new ODs, and zero for my new IDs. There was one tapered transition that I was able to create with a revolve.

In NX4 I have a couple detail views (the little circular window) of a cylindrical part side view.

I figured out the twist problem. I chose "Angle" alignment & picked the center of the 2 circles. I don't understand why it worked, but it did.

It's very handy running SWX on 2 monitors (or at lease it was, before SolidWorks unintentionally hobbled this functionality).
I could view a long part across both monitors, or have an part on the left with an assembly, drawing or another part on the right.

For those of you that are running nView succesfully in SWX 2009 or newer (with the non-Windows standard interface), can you maximize the SWX window to either monitor, or both with a single mouse click? And can you keep a child window from expanding to both monitors?

I've never had luck printing to an exact scale from ANY CAD program.
Maybe the best you can do is to force the software to print the scale you need by measuring the output & adding a scale factor. For example if a 5.5" part comes out 5.6", next time try a scale of .982.
