Shade Canopy on Existing Parking Garage

Thanks for the response. I'm kind of visualizing the canopies too as like a penthouse but not quite though. I'm being told since it does not match any of the non-building types under chapter 13 or 15 tables for classification, it should be under "all other self-supporting structures" type...

Shade Canopy on Existing Parking Garage

Hi, question about a steel shade canopy (with solar panels) being put on top of an existing concrete parking garage (4-story SMF). The canopy is an ordinary cantilever column system but the plan reviewer is requiring that I design the canopy under section 13 of the ASCE for seismic purposes. He...

    Willamette I-Joists

Hi! I'm looking for old allowable load tables or legacy ICBO report (PFC-4544) for this I-joist. I found out that they were bought by Weyerhaueuser a while back and the only old literature I can find is for I-joists up to 16" deep. The ICC site is not showing anything even for legacy reports...

    simple shear connections

He finally agreed with me, actually he just kind of conceded by not discussing the issue anymore. He raised a new one though, now questioning what is the guarantee that both bolts are engaged in shear, not just one bolt carrying the entire shear. I'm thinking as long as the ssl hole tolerance...

    simple shear connections

Thanks guys! The reviewer's concern is with a fixed beam model, the reaction moment resolved into horizontal shear would over-stress the bolts to failure. About the ssl holes binding up, I think it's a non-issue here as the connections only have 2 bolts. I'm guessing that's more likely to...

    simple shear connections

Thanks Ron, that's what I read here on some of the threads that I searched. The problem is that the structure is already built and modeling the beams as fixed, the connections cannot accommodate the reaction moment without a substantial re-work. Even swapping the bolts with A490 would still not...

    simple shear connections

Steel beam framing to another beam with a typical shear tab and 1 row of bolts in ssl holes. Where the end of the beam is at a concrete wall, it is connected to the wall with an embed plate and welded shear plate also with 1 row of bolt in ssl holes. I have a reviewer telling me that these...

    Help ID this joist

Thanks Steve, that's my guess also after jike mentioned Macomber as a possible candidate and found an old Structure magazine article about old joist systems.

    Help ID this joist

Thanks for all the responses. Al - That's what I'm saying. it's not a butler joist but the hat channel chords are nearly identical to what Butler uses with the lips on the flanges. No tags on the joists and not sure how old is the building. I would say 1970's.

    Help ID this joist

Hope someone can help me ID this steel joist. It looks like a Butler joist with very similar hat channels as chords (with lips) but the end is not quite the same. The joist has square ends and attached to the side of the girder joist. Also, I was told that Butler's are typically spaced at 5'...

Type of liner for containment pit

Hi! I have a project where I have to design a small concrete containment pit for hydraulic oil. In case of a spill (we're talking about a small volume of oil, probably in the 10-20 gals range), the owner wanted a second layer of protection by putting a liner below and around the concrete pit...

    Workers compensation insurance

I just went thru with this question recently. It depends on your State. In AZ, if you can be considered a sole proprietor business, it's not required by State law to have worker's comp but you may get one, if you prefer. If you have 1099 contractors, you make each one of them sign a worker's...

Asked to "bid" for professional services

This is a very common practice unfortunately and very upsetting. I have a take it or leave it approach. You can shop around if you want but the price I give you is the one I will accept. I'd like to think my rate is very reasonable and I normally estimate based on how many hours I think I'm...

Genentech Offers Secret Rebates for Eye Drug

I do understand rebates. I actually just bought software the other day with a rebate offer and being the one who paid for it, will eventually get the rebate. Not the person who recommended the software title to me, for the task that I was trying to do. The scheme on that story that I posted is...

Given a 1099, Should I Ask Them To Sign Contract?

Just like what CVG stated, you do an MSA then simply ask for a PO for each project for the agreed on fee. You tell them that your insurance carrier requires a written contract to get coverage whether it's an MSA, your company's standard contract or theirs.

Genentech Offers Secret Rebates for Eye Drug

I just read the news about the top Medicare billers and this story from years ago is somewhat linked to the Medicare billing story. How is this practice not illegal? It amounts to a kick back scheme. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/04/business/04eye.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 If we do this on...

Al, you've earned it. I know I'm not the only one that you've helped on this forum.

Thanks again Al! I wish every PEMB mfr. is as responsive as Butler.
