It is right, their is common formula to calculate the maximum Mises in this way, that the maximum of all stress components (independing of their phase angele is used). That leads to wrong result if they are great differences in the phase for stress components.
But this is not my problem know...
The problem is, that the Mises stress is a function of the phase angle. Usally you need the maximum of the Mises stress over the phase angle.
You can not solve this analytically - heavily nonlinear. And if you have a hughe FE-Model with several 100.000 elements you need a fast approximation...

How do I calculate the magnitude of the mises stress?
Be aware that the mises stress itself is not harmonic!! So i have to find the maximum over the phase angle. Theirfor a formula should exist.
