Thanks for the input.
I've decided this isn't a very robust design, so I'm going to change it to a .08 pitch MXL belt drive on the 2.5" dia. pulley driving a smooth face 7.5" dia. wheel.

"Why don't you design the capstan as an adjustable, spring-loaded pressure mechanism and dial it in while you're running?"
I need a ballpark number so I can be sure the system bearings will handle the load.
I want to creat a capstan drive on an engine dynomometer. The drive wheel is aluminum 2.5" dia X 1" wide, running at 12,000 RPM and the driven wheel is 7.5" dia X 1" wide with bonded buna tire shore D 70.
The wheels need to resist a 27# shear load at the area of contact.
The question is how much...
I've designed a variation of a Grubbs aparatus for removing water from various chemicals. We're testing with Pentane to determine the efficiency of the new design, so it's important to know where we're starting from. Organometalic chemists in need chemical devoid of water for some of their...
.01 gram/liter is the same answer I got from a chemist at GE Infrastructure. My problem is that it differs from the answer I got from tech support at Fisher Scientific by a factor of 10 (.1 gram/liter). Also adding to the confusion is that I don't know if the tech support people at Fisher are...
I haven't any real idea how to do this;
I'm working on a system that blows nitrogen (@25 deg. C) through copper 1.5" ID tubes at 40CFM and 10" water pressure.
The question is if I extend the 1.5" pipe by 30 feet and add 10 90 degree bends what will be the CFM and pressure...
Thanks Desertfox;
First, let me clarify, we are working on a torsion bar spring, not a coil of any sort.
second, I understand;
T/J= GQ/L re-arrange to find J
TL/GQ = J (but I disagree with your result 6.51x 10^-5)
100x18/(12x10^6x22 x2x3.142/360)=6.51x10^-5 inch^4...
Thanks Desert Fox;
Weight is not a factor.
Do I understand the safe stress (TR/J=t) must be multiplied by the total number of degrees being twisted, to determine shear stress?
Would you agree that safe stress for quenched and tempered (400 degree) SAE 1085 is approx 76,000 PSI?
Maxium twist is...
Shopguy,
You're right, the large gear was really 70T not 140T.
I've decided to go witha Fairfield W2B3 torque hub. It's much more expensive but more reliable in the long run.
I'm building a winch system with a 16" dia. drum (single wrap). The winch is required to lift a 3600# load at 20 FPM. The maximum speed of the winch is 105 FPM.
My Hydraulic motor runs at 660 RPM (max)and requires a minimum of 7:1 gear ratio to achieve the specified torque.
I was going...
Jackboot;
Thanks, I checked out the fairfieldmfg.com site and found a program named kec_vlm.exe, but it's password protected, and there's no description of it's purpose.
Is this the right program? Do you have the password?
