Question regarding "standard" bolt shoulder lenghts

Thanks for the input. In my particular application I am dealing with shouldered bolts that we cut some of the threaded length off. We may use a 5/8 bolt that needs 5" of shoulder, but we only need "?" of thread. Since they don't make a 5/8 bolt with 5" of shoulder that has only "?" of thread, I...

Question regarding "standard" bolt shoulder lenghts

Is there standardized formula or rule of thumb, for determining shoulder(shank)length versus total length, of a grade 8 hex head bolt? I am looking for a chart or a rule of thumb that shows the how long of a bolt is required to get specific shoulder length. For instance. How long of a 5/8" bolt...

    Drilling acronyms

There is a book put out by the Desk & Derrick club called the D&D STANDARD OIL ABBREVIATOR. There's one for sell on e-bay

    Crude oil pipeline abandonment

Greg, thanks for the reply. Your input confirms what I have found from a couple of other sources. The project has moved ahead.

    Weeping Tile

Most perforated drain pipe is flared on one end so that there are male and female ends to each pipe. Lacking a flared end you would use a coupling. BTW the perforations are placed on the bottom so that the water doesn't have to build up to the top of the pipe before draining.

    Crude oil pipeline abandonment

We don't currently have legal access to the pipe.

    Crude oil pipeline abandonment

I'm looking at an existing "abandoned" pipeline in Southern California. We are looking more into potential impact from residual product or perhaps the abandonment process. I've got an overly conservative client and I'm trying to calm their fears. Thanks for your input.

    Crude oil pipeline abandonment

I'm trying to find information about crude oil pipeline abandonment standards or techniques. Is the line flushed? If so, what is used?? Is the line purged with an inert gas? Thanks in advance.

Phase I ESA Env. Lien Search

As a lender they may not be liable, but if they ever have to foreclose on the property, they become the owner and then are liable. I have had clients (who are lenders) that have “walked away” from properties rather than foreclose and become liable. But in my opinion, who is exempt and who is...

    Welding Aluminum, GTAW

It is quite possible that you problem is the oil from cooking the donuts has caused contamination. So you may need to clean the fryer grease off the rack before you can weld it. I would try a non-residue type of solvent to clean with, maybe even something like a spray brake cleaner. Then brush...

Pavement Meets Desert. (Will they mix?)

6000 miles of Dakar has little to do with it when you have the team support to put re-build the cars every night. I'd like to see any of the top Dakar cars run for 1000 miles straight, let alone 2000 miles as we did for the Baja 2000. Ricky Johnson (motocross hero)wadded one Trailblazer (end...

Pavement Meets Desert. (Will they mix?)

I was on the Herzog Vortec team who ran Trevor Harris designed "Trail Blazers". Although we were held back due to using the in-line six, the two Trail Blazers worked much better than any of the competition. Jhon Hoffman (Pflugers top guy) was also one of the top Herzog guys and has a great deal...

    coming out of corners

Oh yeah I forgot what type of bike? A little YZ 80 with a "light switch" power band or a 450 thumper that pulls stumps? Each is ridden differently and different technique are applied.

    coming out of corners

Berm or no berm? Blue grove or soft sand? There are kind of a lot of different types of turns in MX. Why don't you start and people will respond to your idea.

So You Gut Shot an Estimate . . .

If you "gut shoot" an estimate, then shame on you for not crunching the numbers properly. You also made your estimate on preliminary drawings without contingency to changes made for final drawings. Some lessons are more costly to learn than others.

    2 stroke engine intake position

This was not one of the first reed valve engines!! McCulloch had them in the 50's with their D30 chain saws. It's real hard to say which will give the more bottom end torque unless you compaired engines with the exact same port timing shape and size.

    Standards on Gas Measurment

Pretty poor form for your mud logger and the other company not to be able to provide the info you requested. (I’d run them off if it were me!). I would ask to see the daily calibration check the mud logger and the system person should be doing. It could be that at lest one of them is “dog...

    Spill cleanup

Almost a full third of my work is involved with the investigation and remediation of dry cleaning sites. DNAPL is the acronym for "dense non-aqueous phase liquid". It is not uncommon for impacted dry cleaning sites to not have the contaminate present in the liquid phase, but rather only in...

    Spill cleanup

Seems a little confusing that the site as already been monitored for some time, yet a monitoring only plan is about to be issued. You need to see what the regulator (DERM) has had to say about the site and what they expect to see before any NFA is issued. Looking just at the reports from the...
