This particular application would be a maximum of 3000 gpm, but I would love to know how to calculate for future applications where the flow rate may differ.
We are trying to properly size the sump for a vertical turbine pump taking suction from a pond. The sump will have a straight channel approach. NFPA 20 states that the sump should be sized in accordance with the Hydraulics Institute Standards for Centrifugal, Rotary, and Reciprocating Pumps...
I cannot stress enough that you must pay attention to the manufacturers data sheet for whichever hose you choose. Each one has different requirements for the minimum bend radius, as well as maximum number of bends. Getting the minimum bend radius in many installations is next to impossible due...
My company has been contracted to install a fire sprinkler system in a generating plant with steel grated mezzanines. We would like to be able to use drivable scissor lifts on the grating, but are unsure if the grating is suitable. The customer has informed us the grating has a 150lb/sq.ft...
I sounds like you need to at least contact someone at MEPCad to get a demonstration of AutoSPRINK before making your decision. I think a lot of your perceived issues are more of a lack of familiarity with the program. I am sure someone from the sales team would be gald to meet and show you...
"For those that don't like CPVC, what are your thoughts on flexheads and other technology like that?"
I don't have anything against CPVC personally, but to install it correctly, complying with all the manufacturer requirements seems to be more trouble than it is worth. You have to make sure...
1. Run 1½" into the valve and decrease /increase on both sides, using the appropriate friction loss for the valve.
or
2. Separate the two into respective systems and add the domestic demand to your calcs at the intersection point. Usually you can get an estimate for the demand from the...
Ok, I probably should have elaborated. My guys can center heads very well actually, but this application where the 1" outlet will be about 8' above an existing GWB ceiling would be made much easier with a laser plumb line. This is a retrofit job, where the man below the ceiling will be cutting...
Years ago I remember using a laser pointer specifically made to fit in a 2x2 ceiling grid that aided in centering the sprinkler heads. It projected a plumb line vertically that one could measure to. I have researched the internet but haven't been able to find one. I am hoping someone here is...
From 14, 2010:
6.3.5.2 A listed pressure-regulating device that prevents backflow shall be considered a check valve, and an additional check valve shall not be required.
I'm not saying the Wilkins is capable of preventing backflow, but that may have been the logic behind the design.
I...
NFPA 2007, Sect. 8.16.3.4 requires all branch lines on gridded systems to be "arranged for flushing". If you flushed each end of the secondary crossmain, wouldn't you be flushing each branch line as well? I have an AHJ that wants to see an individual flushing connection on each branch line in...
I agree with Pedarrin2. You should run from this one. The underground isn't capable of providing either standpipe demand, 1000gpm or 1250 without going below 20psi. It doesn't matter what size pump you try to plug in. You are most likely looking at a large storage tank to supplement the city...
First of all, I believe the required standpipe demand is only 1000gpm for a fully sprinklered building. With that said, even with a smaller pump, it appears your supply isn't capable of delivering even the 1000 without dipping below the 20psi.
It isn't unreasonable to assume the engineer did...
I have seen fittings hold during a test, and after that were not glued. After they blew apart it was discovered that just a bit of over applied cement from the opposite side of the fitting had been holding it in place.
Which large insurance co. are you referring to? I was told by a senior engineer with FM Global that they dropped their velocity restrictions several years ago.
It isn't the air supply in question. We are using nitrogen as the air supply. The dry pac only prevents more moisture from being introduced to the system. The problem is drying out the residual moisture in the system after acceptance tests. Thank you for taking the time to provide the links.
