    Sprinklers-Where Required

The only exception I can think of is if you are in a state like Michigan where the state has a mini/maxi building code. In this case, regardless of the requirement in the local fire code, the construction requirements may not be more restrictive than the state building code. I hope this is not...

    FDC and Exterior Alarm

As an AHJ, (recently retired), I usually asked that the alarm device be over the fdc when installed on the building. This was mainly for the firefighters to locate the fdc easier. It was not a code requirement. Later in my career, I required the alarm device to be a horn/strobe because modern...

External fire alarm bell (or water motor gong)

FFP1, Here is an exerpt from the International Fire Code, 2009 edition: 903.4.2 Alarms. Approved audible devices shall be connected to every automatic sprinkler system. Such sprinklerwater-flow alarm devices shall be activated by water flow equivalent to the flowof a single sprinkler of the...

"Limited" combustibles above ceiling of church.

This would not be considered limited combustible in my juridiction. I would have thought mixing wood and metal would have been caught during plan review, unless someone changed the type of building material after the plans were reviewed. I have encountered the latter in my career.

    Sprinkler Head Inside Drywall

This does not appear to be a code violation, but I would consider ignoring situations like this a violation of Best Practice and at the very least poor customer service. A few hundred dollars removing the unnecessary piping and heads could save thousands in water damage down the road.

    antifreze system

woochop, Per NFPA 13, 2007 Edition, 8.15.18.2 Return bends shall be connected to the top of branch lines in order to avoid accumulation of sediment in the drop nipples in accordance with Figure 8.15.18.2.

Are tamper switches on backflow OS&Y valves required?

FFP1, The code section that I quoted was cut and pasted directly from the 2006 IFC and the quote did not include the word "dedicated". Also, this code section does not refer to a specific occupancy type.

When do new codes take effect?

The I-codes have a chapter dedicated to referenced standards. Once an I-code is adopted, the standard listed in that chapter is adopted by reference and is enforcable as part of the adopted code.

Are tamper switches on backflow OS&Y valves required?

SD2, To add to what stookeyfpe said, 903.4 Sprinkler system monitoring and alarms. All valves controlling the water supply for automatic sprinkler systems, pumps, tanks, water levels and temperatures, critical air pressures, and water-flowswitches on all sprinkler systems shall be electrically...

fire sprinkler 200 lb acceptance test

The purpose of the 200 pound test is to make sure the piping is tight and that it will withstand the pressure of a fire department pumper. The reason for disconnecting the pump is to prevent anyone from pumping up a leaking system, thereby creating a false pressure test. Periodically pumping up...

fire sprinkler 200 lb acceptance test

capsnspa, As an AHJ, I have been "witnessing" 200 pound tests for nearly thirty years. I could never have stayed on site for the tests, as I was the only person doing inspections. When I wasn't able to return at the end of the two hours, I accepted the Contractor's Material & Test Certificate...

    CFPE test

pipesnpumps, I definately agree with Arsnman4 about the size of the print on the plans. I took a magnifying glass with me to the exam, after my instructor advised of the problem.

    CFPE test

pipenpumps Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the IFMA Manual?

    CFPE test

pipesnpumps, Go to the NFPA website and click on Training. Just follow the linkls from there. The test is similar to the Fire Inspector I test.

IBC 903.3.1.2.1 (13R and sprinklers on balconies)

SprinklerDesigner2, I asked this question at a 13,13R,13D code update seminar just two weeks ago. The answer was the same as what stookeyfpe said. I asked what the rational was not to protect exit access and was given no logical explanation. Also, as stookey said, there is a list of acceptable...

Dry pendants from attic - zoning issue

rmae, I now understand your reasoning for the use of the dry pendant. I am in Michigan, where dry systems are used also, however none of the systems that I have reviewed or inspected have used dry pendants on dry pipe systems, probably for cost savings reasons. Thanks.

Dry pendants from attic - zoning issue

rmae, Unless I am misunderstanding your terminology for sprinkler heads, why would you use dry pendant sprinkler heads on a dry pipe system?
  18. byrnesf

Shall vs Should. So what is the right thing to do when inspecting?

As an AHJ, I never interchange the two terms. If I was a private inspector or consultant, I would follow the appropriate code section with "This requirement is enforcable by the AHJ, if adopted." That gives the client a heads up as to the possibiliy of future enforcement action. Just a little...

    Wholly noncombustible contents

bimr, What type of water treatment operation is being conducted? We have two under construction in my jurisdiction. They are both iron removal plants with liquid chlorination. We have adopted the IFC and because of the quantity of hazardous chemicals, the storage area is required to be sprinkled...

What Year Was the "NFPA Handbook, Revision 14" Issued?

vpl, The 14th edition of the NFPA Handbook was published in 1976, and all references to NFPA Standards were as of the latest edition of that standard. Hope this helps.
