Aggregate base for roadway, contractor states it needs to "cure"?

Thank you to everyone for your comments. Just to let you know the VE proposal was actually rejected prior to me posting this thread. I was curious to get others comments and the points brought up in this discussion were some of the exact same reasons why the proposal was denied. It's...

Aggregate base for roadway, contractor states it needs to "cure"?

I've recently switched jobs from a private Geotechnical Consultanting firm to a State DOT. Part of my responsibilities with the State DOT is providing pavement designs and reviewing “Value Engineering" proposal when a contractor feels they can save the State money by building the roadway...

Stabilizing / "fixing" a leaning concrete cantilever wall

PEinc What type of soils did you have behind the backfill zone to anchor into? Did you have structural info on the walls (type of reinforcing steel, spacing, one or two curtains of steel, if one, what face, etc..) I do not have this info available for the walls on my project and nobody can...

Stabilizing / "fixing" a leaning concrete cantilever wall

We have had speciality contractors come to our office and give presentations on the different applications where they have used Helical Anchors and I have been considering that option. Did you design the anchor in-house our sub it out? Debating over giving a local speciality contractor soil...

Stabilizing / "fixing" a leaning concrete cantilever wall

cvg I see what you mean from the sketch. Worth a look. Would you try to push the walls back? Also the bottom walls are nearly parallel but the spillway is wider at the entrance than it is at the outlet so the walls angle away from each other.

Stabilizing / "fixing" a leaning concrete cantilever wall

all good comments. You are correct that Dam Safety has recommended to the owner that the spillway be investigated and any necessary repairs be made before they will renew their permit. I’ve considered anchors but hesitant without knowing anything about the reinforcing steel in the walls...

Stabilizing / "fixing" a leaning concrete cantilever wall

Does anyone have tips regarding recommendations for stabilizing or in the clients words "fix" leaning concrete cantilever retaining walls? A client has an emergency spillway for a lake that was constructed of segmental concrete cantilever retaining walls that vary in height from 4 feet to 13.5...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

miecz a compensated foundation, also referred to as a floating foundation, is a foundation that is designed and constructed by excavating a volume of soil with a weight nearly equal to that of the proposed structure and then constructing the foundation in the bottom of the excavation, thus the...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

okay. but say you are to give a footing pressure for a fully compensated mat foundation 10 feet in the ground and the total unit weight of the soil removed is 120 pcf How would you term that pressure in a report? Net allowable bearing pressure of 0 psf? Allowable bearing pressure of 1200...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

miecz First I hope my comment, "you're not him are you??" was taken in good fun - that is the way it was intended anyway. Second, you are correct that nobody, besides yourself, directly answered my question in the OP. Third, and this ties in with JAE's latest post, I have always intended for a...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

miecz Interesting. That is the same argument/disagreement interpretation issues I had with the original SEOR. You’re not him are you??? Funny after all the above comments it comes around full circle again.

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

fattdad Good points and that is why I'm not a fan of Fully compensated foundations or "floating" foundations, plus buoyancy affects come into play if there are groundwater issues. ptd

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

J1D First, yes the pressure given was completely governed by settlement, which muddies the water a little bit when considering the difference between bearing CAPACITY, and how it is determined, and bearing PRESSURE, and how it is determined. BigH defines these two well in the comment above...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

Thanks for all the discussion; I find this site to be quite insightful. I was curious how other folks would view the situation in the OP and if technically (terminology) there was anything wrong with how the situation was resolved. I've never been in court but have a bad habit of thinking how...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

UcfSE I think this is where some confusion comes into play, and fattdad let me know if you don't agree because this ties in with my original question. Yes the ultimate bearing capacity in Terzaghi's equation accounts for the overburden and even the allowable bearing capacity does after...

Interpretation of Net Allowable Bearing Pressure

I realize this topic has appeared and been discussed here many times, but for myself I would like to bring it up one last time to assure myself I’m thinking correctly when explaining this topic to fellow structural engineers that call regarding this question. Most recently I had a site that...
