How do you cope with installation, upgrades & other CAD Admin tasks, particularly for Pro/E & Intralink?
Are you a full-time Admin person, or do you do it on top of your regular job?
In preparation for a PTC/User 2004 presentation, I'm trying to get an idea of the experiences of CAD...
Previous versions of Pro/E mainly used the right-hand menus, so the mapkey lists were like this:
mapkey(continued) #TABLE;#REPEAT REGION;#FIX INDEX;
Nowadays, most commands use drop-down menus or dialog boxes, so the mapkeys are harder to edit, eg:
mapkey(continued) ~ Select `main_dlg_cur`...

The hide function is just a temporary display option - it doesn't save with the assembly. (ie next time you open the assembly, all the parts will show).
Use Simplified Rep (or Component Display) for views that you want to save & retrieve later.
For a mechanism - create snapshots of the mechanism (when you define different stages by clicking on the camera icon).
In drawing mode, create a new view, and make it an exploded view. Select the view state you saved in mechanism... it will show the assembly in the position.
About the problem with intermittent config.win files - the way to combine them all is:
- move all config.win files out of your \proe_loadpoint\text\ folder & startup folder
- then start Pro/E - so it's running with a default screen (no customisation)
- then Customise screen, uncheck the Auto...
To show different instances with different colours:
- add a surface to the model which includes all surfaces
- then give this surface a colour
- add the surface to the family table & turn on/off as req
- create new surfaces for each colour
Works OK.

This will lock any dimension you modify during a sketcher session:
Utilities > Sketcher Preferences > Display
Tick "Lock Modified Dimensions"
I don't know if there's a way to lock all the dimensions with one pick...

PTC do a couple of programs which may help:
- ProductView - can view Pro/E files (you need to install object filters)
- Pro/Desktop express can also view Pro/E files
Check www.ptc.com for more.

You could insert a note in the model:
Setup > Notes > New
Enter text, ie:
&material
These will show on the model (assuming you have allowed 3D notes to show) & can also be shown on the drawing.

Once you've got a color.map file (either downloaded or created) - save it into your working directory - then Pro/E will use these colours by default.

Problem:
When you remove an Object Attribute from Intralink, but still have many items referencing this attribute, check-ins give warnings (Attribute not defined in Commonspace, etc).
In Intralink 3.0 2001200 these are overrideable, but the warnings always come up, even next time you check out &...
You could create a Simplified Rep in the assembly without the cuts & show this rep in your drawing views.
If you don't have access to simplified reps, try a family table instance with the cuts suppressed - show this instance in drawings.

In Pro/E 2001 (2001320) Drawing mode, this "Pick Many" Mapkey still works - you can draw a box around many dimensions and modify their properties all at once (tolerances, text style, etc).
It must be choosing commands that still exist "behind the scenes", although it may be...
Add this mapkey to your config.pro:
mapkey md @MAPKEY_NAMEModify Many Dimensions;mapkey(continued) @MAPKEY_LABELModify Many Dimensions;#MODIFY;#DIMENSION;#PICK MANY;
This will allow you to modify many dimensions at once.
