    An engineering lesson

''We sell cars to new car buyers, not to shade tree mechanics.'' And the new car customer goes to the dealer for their servicing. If the vehicles has noticeably higher servicing costs for simple mundane repairs....they might decide on a different brand next time a new car is needed. But the...

    An engineering lesson

Yes, as a mere mechanic I can easily pass judgement on those who know so much more than me...and do so everyday, shaking my head. Having to remove a front bumper just to change a headlamp bulb...when a simple window in the guard liner would be much easier, surely it's not going to blow the...

Interference fit (press fit) cylinder liners

There are some dry liner diesel engines that have slip fit liners, though there is a deck flange The Mitsubishi 4D55 had stepless dry liners....and they used to slip. The later 4D56 had no liners.

    Balance

Looks like a 2 stroke - they would be stuffing plugs to reduce crankcase volume, increase crankcase compression.

Applying Crank Case Vacuum in single cylinder engines

As mentioned most singles, and 360 firing twins usually use a check valve of some sort....and others just a hose of certain length. Triumph twins used a timed breather on the inlet camshaft, venting to atmosphere, creating another oil leak, and by the '70's HC emissions. So they did away with...

    Kettering Dual Points Theory

British motorcycle twins used a single lobe cam and twin points, the Trident and Rocket III triple points. You set timing for each cylinder individually. Other engines were similar. Or single points and cam lobe on a waste spark like BMW twins.

    GAS/LPG ENGINE LINE PRESSURE

Do you have heating for the regulators ? Working hard they will freeze up without hot water plumbed to them.

Generating an ignition spark with no ecu

The original Britten used a couple of chainsaw ign systems - a chainsaw flywheel on the end of the crank, and a couple of coils in the appropriate places. Simple as, as we say here.

    Failed conrod, no knock?

Pistons hitting heads seems to be the symptom of a worn bigend these days rather than a bearing knock...much tighter squish areas ? And the piston is much closer to the head on a diesel of course. On the Mitsubishi 4D56 we would measure piston height above the block and machine to suit.

    Failed conrod, no knock?

You wouldn't be getting rod knock, but the knock of the piston hitting the head. I've heard that before, and loud enough to be worried about. 3L problems are usually a cracked head.

    Over head cam

''Available in the US market''....I wondered why it was so biased.

    Over head cam

[ I don't think Honda has ever built a pushrod engine for automotive or motorcycle applications.] Ooops....The first C50 was a pushrod engine, the CG110 and 125 were very popular, and of course the CX already mentioned. They also made a high cam engine in quads, similar to BMW, where the cam is...

    Pressure washing engine

We had more problems steam cleaning or water blasting engines with distributors, exposed coils and carburettors than modern engines. Always had to clean out the dist, run up, then clean again. Use a small unit, 1,000psi is ok, those 3,000psi ones are the ones that cause the problems...and just...

    Annoying Engine Regulations

No, I wasn't premixing, I was mixing fuel and oil in the motorcycle tank, and riding away. Premix refers to mixing fuel and oil in a container and then pouring into the bikes fuel tank...I do that with lawnmowers and chainsaws, and I've done it with off road motorcycles, but since the '70's most...

    Annoying Engine Regulations

[The thing about 4-stroke scooters is that they aren't that much more expensive anymore. They are much easier/cheaper to operate because: - Not having to buy/add premix - They take a lot longer to run the engine into the ground than 2T without any rebuilds] Premix ? The last bike I had with...

    Exhaust flexible component existence

The Mini sure needed a flex pipe - but BMC were onto it. The 1800 had a flex pipe, and needed it. I once welded one up solid in an emergency fix...and later the end of the exhaust manifold broke off. So the Austin 1800 was the first flex pipe I came across, although I think the Wolseley 6/110...

Is it piston rings or valve stem seals? ;/

Had a bike in the shop last year, smoking and burning oil. Another dealer had fitted a completely new top end, but it was still the same. I was given another top end, and told to keep my eyes open. It was pretty obvious when I saw the diagonal wear pattern on the piston - a bent rod. A new...

Breaking an engine and clutch, because of shifting to wrong gear in downshift

A diesel is always an interference engine, if it's a pushrod engine it'll bend pushrods. OHC will do other things depending on how the valves work - break rockers, break cams, compress valves. They are low revving, even in a car, so easy to over rev on a downshift. What sort of damage was done ?

    "Comprex" pressure-wave supercharger

I was a bit puzzled when I first came across these on Mazdas. Belt brand and tension was critical...you knew it was slipping because the backside of the filter was black with soot.

tips for oxy acetylene welding aluminized exhaust pipe

We struck this problem in the '70's when this stuff first appeared, it turned our nice gas welds into a mess. Grinding it off works, but not always possible in exhaust repair. Agitating and scraping the scum off the puddle with the rod helps - you're not going to get a good looking weld anyway...
