Normally what I do is create a rectangle where the length and width are twice the semimajor and semiminor dimensions of your desired ellipse. The length and width can be controlled by a sketch dimension or an expression.

Try your sweep again but use 2 helix curves (or whatever kind if curve you want). It seems like when a section is swept along a single radial type curve it looses it's orientation along that curve so the results are less...

Personally I prefer it since it will also give me option to rename part or all of the file name (such as rev letter or number for us non-teamcenter drivers).
