I am using the set of selected faces (all of the faces on the outside of the case) as my cut area. I have my "workpiece" geometry set up with the solid body of my part as the "part" and another solid model of my blank as the "blank" (that sounds redundant, but I think it makes sense)
The issue...
I've played around with it a bit more and here is an update:
Turns out Cutting->Containment->Trim->Silhouette was a bad idea. I've reset it to "None"
I have been able to get an acceptable toolpath if I leave the Cut Levels as default, but as soon as I delete the lowest cut level, the...
I am trying to generate machine code for an aluminum case using NX3 and I am having some issues getting a clean cutting path.
I am using Cavity Mill on a set of selected faces (all the faces on the outside of a contoured case)
The piece of rectangular blank material will be bolted down in the...
Thanks for the replies.
Let's say I do method 1) from swall above (rough machine equally from both sides, then finish machine)
How many times should I flip back and forth? 2? 4? 8?
Any ideas on how much distortion I might expect? 0.001" change in flatness across the mounting face? .01"? 0.1"?
I looked into my material a bit more and it turns out that it is actually 6061-T6511
Does this make any difference?
What are advantages and disadvantages of rough machining, letting sit for 2 weeks, then finish machining?
Thanks for the info.
What sort of trends can I expect for distortion? Will the part tend to grow or shrink in diameter? By about how much? Is twisting a possibility?
I am getting ready to machine an approximately 8" x 12" gear case out of 6061-T6 extruded billet (3" thick billet). I will be removing a lot of material to create basically a shell case of about 0.2" thick, with stiffening ribs and bearing pockets.
I would like to maintain fairly tight...
The part is 2 inches OD but has a 1 inch hole through the center, so it is relatively "thin" throughout.
The stock is actually 4142 hot rolled heat treated steel from Speedy Metals. Their documetation says it is pre-hardened to 27-32 rockwell C, but that's about all it says.
Is an anneal...
I am making a splined engagement dog of about 2 inches in diameter. The stock material I have to use is 4140 pre-hardened to roughly 30 HRc.
The part will be machined then I would like the hardness to be increased to roughly 45 HRc and then finally internal splines will be cut using Wire EDM...
I actually had this same issue, so I'm glad I found the answer.
Is there a way to print to .pdf directly in NX3? I have not been able to find this option anywhere in the printing or plotting menus.
Sorry, I forgot to mention I'm using NX3.
How do I activate the level based in process workpiece? That option seems to make sense, but I don't immediately see it (like many options in NX3 that like to hide from me)
I am trying to generate machine code for milling a pocket with filleted edges at the base of the pocket and I can't seem to find a good manufacturing operation to do this!
I would like to rough out the pocket with a square end mill and then finish the bottom with a ball end mill (or a rounded...
None of the colors were manually changed for any of the curves. I tried adjusting some constraints, but they colors remained the same. Any other thoughts as to what the green and blue mean?
What does it mean when part of a sketch appears blue while part of a sketch appears green?
This happens while viewing the part in the modeler, with no sketch active.
I'm looking at implementing a 2 speed gearbox after a belt driven CVT transmitting 15 HP max. The RPM from the CVT will max out at 5000 rpm and the low gear reduction is about 1.5 times the high gear reduction.
I would like to shift between the two gears on the fly, and I would like to avoid a...
This is indeed for a prototype, so the cost of EDM is not of great concern.
Thanks for the info on hydrogen embrittlement; I was trying to determine if heat treat would be better before or after cutting, but it seems that heat treating after cutting is the way to go.
Anyone have any more...
I have looked for information relating to wire EDM as a method of gear manufacture but have not been able to find too much useful information.
Does anyone have any experience in using wire EDM for cutting steel gears? What kind of surface finish is to be expected?
I am working on a small planetary gearbox design (5 inch ring) to transmit approximately 8 HP. I have done some gear stress calculations and found that I can decrease the gear stress by increasing the pressure angle from 20 degrees to 25 degrees. What disadvantages are associated with a 25...
