    Static Thyristor AVR

The AVR is a BRUSH Static Thyristor Automatic Voltage Regulator (STAVR) and was manufactured by them to provide excitation generally to salient pole generators fitted with a permanent magnet generator. 1. The Voltage Setting Potentiomeeter is the +/- 10% voltage adjustment of the AVR, the hand...

load bank for testing 5000 kVA generator

We use 11kV 3MVA load banks on our site. They were manufactured by Crestchic Ltd who are still in business.

    DC Generator Hire

Does anybody know of a UK hirer of DC generating sets (1200A at 270V),or even rectifiers of that rating?

    SKM Naming issue

If you open the Component Editor (top left icon) in the Menu Bar, you will be able to identify and delete the component by right clicking it, this will open the sub menu allowing you to then destroy the component. Depending on the version of SKM you have you may also find unused components by...

    SKM Naming issue

The fact that you have not destroyed the component means the original name still exists as the component is still in the model. I believe you will have to either use a new name or destroy the original component in the Base scenario and start again with a new component using the old name.

    Polarization Index

I believe there is no merit in carrying out a PI test on the 480V LV winding, I am suprised you managed to get a PI as high as 2. I only carry out PI tests on 6.6kV and above using a 5kV DC megger. I would recommend that you energise the transformer as the insulation resistances you have...

    Polarization Index

A couple of other questions: What are the primary and secondary voltages of the transformer, and is the PI result you quote the LV winding to earth?

What is the final (10 minute) insulation resistance?

Current abnormal increase on paralleling generator with DECS200 regul

It sounds like the voltage droop characteristic of the AVR is incorrect. The AVR droop setting should provide a falling voltage characteristic for increasing lagging reactive power. If the droop CT is either in the wrong phase or wrong polarity the AVR output will increase instead of decrease...

Dielectric Discharge (DD) Testing of XLPE cables

Has anybody any practical experience of carrying out DD testing on XLPE (11kV) cables. I understand the principles of the test but would be interested to here from others who have actually applied the test in the field and may be able to provide some indication of its effectiveness.

    Recommendations of short circuit software

I've been using SKM Power Tools for a few years now, I use it for short circuit studies, load flow, protection grading and also dynamic studies on rotating machines. Never any problems with bugs etc and relatively simple to use, I would recommend it.

Synchronous motor out of step relay

Under excitation or even a loss of excitation does not allways lead to a loss of synchronism, for instance if the motor is lightly loaded. An under excitation relay can be used but there is allways a risk of spurious tripping during motor supply voltage dips. Most modern protection systems for...

Synchronous motor out of step relay

I think CEE Relays GTM7111 Out of Step Relay is still available, give them a try.

    Self-excited generator

The Electric Construction Company of Wolverhampton was taken over by Brush Electrical Machines (Loughborough) in the mid 70's, I was a commissioning engineer with Brush at the time and remember the drawings etc all transferred to them, might be worth a call to their service department.

Faults in a 110 MW Generator

I wrapped the turns along the length of the rotor including the shaft. The current was held on for just a few seconds. As soon as I reached the maximum current I then started to reduce it, the cycle lasted about 10 seconds. I didn't have a gauss meter on site and measured the effectivness of the...

Faults in a 110 MW Generator

The magnetisation of the shaft will be due to unbalanced flux in the rotor, typically caused by a double earth fault. The double earth fault shorts out part of one poles winding. The shorts may not be obvious at rotor standstill and so may be difficult to find and repair. I de-magnetised a...

Detection of CT secondary open circuit on a running system

As a temporary measure you could select the 46 function on the SEPAM with a low setting and the time function set to definite minimum 0.1 seconds. This would at least detect unballanced CT inputs. Not ideal but would add a degree of confidence.

    Earthing of multiple generators

We have eight idendical 3MW sets running in parallel. Each generator neutral is earthed through 25 ohm resistors. We have never experienced problems with circulating currents, even when the generators are not equally loaded. This configuration is only possible as the design/manufacture of the...
