    Surface Defects/Void Formation

this method works only with prepreg, and preferable with higher resin content. Not to say that it need a very high resin content, just so it's not too dry. It's possible to do a test run of the process and see compared results using a plate where 1 piece is made this way, and the other is made...

    Graphics Card for Ansys

I have 2 systems running ansys, one with quadrofx 3450 and the other with geforce 6800GT, and both are excellent, with a huge price difference. If you can afford pro opengl cards, go for the quadro line, otherwise, try and get the 6800GT or ULTRA. those are modifiable to quadro using riva tuner.

    sketch to 3d curve?

good idea... it does create a new entity, but probbaly better than offset.

3-D input devices by 3dconnexion: any good?

I have the spacemouse, and it was the best spent $500 in my pro. career. in ansys you can manipulate the objects even in selection mode and you don't need to switch selection/action (f9), not to mention working with both hands on the model. only app where it has problems in ansys CFX - no support.

    Surface Defects/Void Formation

with parts which require very good surface qualiy, we use a very thin glass ply on the exterior. In any case, the first ply is applied, and that vacuumed onto the mold. after that, every several plies we do the same bagging. no need to do it in temperature. You can also use a glass ply on the...

    sketch to 3d curve?

Hi I need to convert a sketch into a 3d curve, for doing a bead in sheet metal. This is required for beads which are in mre than 1 plane. is there a simpel way to do it? right now I'm offsetting the sketch to get the 3d curve.

    When do you use FEM

as long as the analysis is static, and can be simplified, there is no real need for FEM. In the real world, eventually you can into normal modes, frequency response and transient analysis. Those things are done only by computer FEM analysis, since any hand calculation is on a VERY basic level.

    Modelling honeycomb core panels

I assume you will be using PCOMP entries for modeling the composite. The problem with honeycomb material properties is that using a linear elastic material for the honeycomb is problematic. you will need to use "virtual" attributes, since honeycomb doesn't act like the regular poission ratio...

    SOL 600

can you share the problems? sol600 is nice, it's almost like having msc marc, but with easier workflow.

Starting a career in composite design and manufacturing

I've begun my career in composites, mostly tooling design. this has been before and while studying. You should spend time on the floor, learning how those things are made, while using your acadmic background for better understanding. Since I'm more into structural design and analysis, I moved...

    UG minimum requirements

A revised note: got the dell 390 workstation today at work... it's certified and a real killer :)

    UG minimum requirements

Ok... I have the following at home: P4 3.4GHz, 2 GB RAM, and a GEFORCE 6800GT. no need for quadro, and I've worked on assmblies with thousends of parts. the importent things are: mid-high level CPU, at least 1 GB RAM, preferably 2, and a GOOD opengl graphics card. quadro is not...

    Interpreting requirements?

Thanks. I have access to MATLAB. How do I need to scan those pics? I have the PDF version so I can just extract the graph. thanks again Jake.

    Hand Stress Analysis

I've joined a nice aviation company as their sole structural analyst, and had very little hand-calc experience prior to that. The hand calculations are not that difficult. If you know the basic rules, the stress/stran relations, and how to use the propere literature (bruhn, niu, etc.) you can...

    Interpreting requirements?

Thanks :) I got my hands on the mil-std-810. I have a few other spectrums, which are shown in a graph, not in a table like the truck spectrum. How can I convert the graph to a table? TIA Jake.

    MPC_RBE2 vs. FASTENERS SIMULATION

I recommend a combination of beam and rbe2 elements. I'm using a beam to model the bolt, and an RBE connection of the bolt to the shell elements. this way the connection is stiff, but the bolt has the real material properties. for extremely precise calculations, model in 3D bolt and body, but...

    Interpreting requirements?

Hi I need to perform vibration and shock analysis for a rather large crate - 3.1*.5 sq. meters. I have some data in the form of vibration specrtum, and a grms value. I do not have the PSD/ASD graph, or any values from it. here is an excerpt from the specs: Vibration: Truck Transportation...

    Equations to estimate drop shock

I want to thank you both for the great material. I need to simulate a crate made of aluminum falling from 61cm, and I think the model which simulated the body as a spring, and the spring being a stiff one for aluminum, is a very interesting model.

    MD NASTRAN

exactly. MD nastran offers the most complete package available today, with a unified interface and input file. It lacks only CFD capabilities, and I really like the ANSYS ICEM-CFD program, but MD has the overall solution. downside - it's VERY expensive, so hardly anyone needs it :)

    MD NASTRAN

You can't compare NEI with MD. MD includes NASTRAN, MARC and DYTRAN all in one interface. Sure nei has nonlinear capabilities, but it's not the same as those in MARC. As well, nothing can beat dytran ls-dyna in high velocity, super deformation analysis.
