I don't mean to throw this thread off, but reading this brings up another question about protecting padmount xfrmrs. When protecting transformers and primary feeds to them, there are some that leave the bayonet fuse to protect the transformer and feeder fusing to protect the wire.
I've seen...
Here's the manufacturer that I am currently reviewing.

I'm not sure that this is the appropriate place, BUT here goes... I am about to review induction lighting fixtures versus using HPS fixtures for roadway lighting. There are a lot of pros for using them: high CRI, longevity, etc., however, I am hesitant on making a decision as far as...
I've recently experienced electric motor startup problems like high thermal temps. for motors 150hp and larger that drive well pumps. I've never had to look into the realm of sub-freezing temps creating a larger current draw on startups as I live in a milder region of the country. I would...
I was thinking in the same manner as WAROSS, but appreciate the other information you all presented.
DPC, sometimes I assume too much when asking for opinions, thanks for your input.
I am usually conservative when sizing transformers as I believe many are oversized, therefore inefficient...
I have run across Anthony Pansini's text and it gives recommended loading for distribution transformers. I believe that some of the recommended kVA ratings seem high. (Just my opinion) For example loading a 167kVA padmount transformer for up to 370kVA load under Table 6-13. I understand that...
You may want to visit Power Monitors at www.powermonitors.com. Their rep visited our office showing their latest and greatest. I was interested in their products, but we are currently using Meggar products that are relatively new.
Can anyone refer me to a basic Total Ownership Cost (TOC) evaluation method for transformer purchasing for utilities? I am reviewing our method and it does not seem appropriate.
Thanks!
I have a contractor that wants to mount a instantaneous gas water heater 15" away from an electric meterbase. Our requirement mentions a gas "meter" to be 3' away from the meterbase, but does not mention gas appliances.
I am looking for a standard that mentions a clearance for gas appliances...
1. In regards to pulling tension calcs, I am trying to determine the jam ratio pulling 4 cables through 6" conduit.
Cables used are:
3-750kcmil diameter:1.73 per cable
1-4/0kcmil diameter:.98 per cable
I am using the following formula:
Ratio= 3D/n1d1+n2d2
Where D=inner diameter of conduit...
Just another idea...
Do you have a SCADA system with a load management option? If so, you can use the already installed SCADA system using load management switches that control oil switches to open or close in the capacitors.
Thanks Bill and jghrist,
Bill's explanation is along the lines of what I believed what is going on...with extra detail! Thank you for your comments. Could be awhile before a decent load will be picked up as the housing market is pretty bad.
I'd appreciate it for some feedback/explanation of the following occurance...
Presently there is a 3 phase 4 wire Y feeding a new subdivision at the end of the line with phase "a" and "c". On the way to the subdivision, there is a pump station with a 120/208 service that is radial fed. Before...
The fuse would be on a "dip pole" radial feeding padmounts. Coordination is what is most important in most cases as jghrist responded. Thanks for the input.
I am in a debate concerning fusing for a distribution system as far as wire and padmount transformers are concerned. There are two schools of thought here. One says to fuse to protect the wire and rely on the bayonet fuses within the padmount transformer, the other says to fuse to protect...
We experienced similar events as johnnyball. The frustrating thing was that we didn't suspect the regulator as it was only 2 years old. We operated the tapchanger manually and came across our problem. (If you are on site with the regulator you will probably hear it as well as see it on you...
I was looking at a table that lists full load ratings for 3-phase transformer banks and ran across a 30kva, 3-phase, 120V listing. . . started talking about it with others and the debate is whether or not the only way to attain this 3-phase voltage is by a delta bank or by some other...
