    12L14 heat treat

We currently carbon nitride our 12L14 pinions to provide a case hardening. We would like to get more strength from this material. Is there a way to induce carbon into the part during the heat treat to increase strength? We would like to match the strength of 4140 thru HT to Rc30. Thanks

    20deg. Vs 14.5deg.

Thanks, We had a 20deg Vs 14.5deg mix-up that was fortunatly cought at first piece inspection. Afterwords the question came up "what happens when you mix pressure angles?" and I could not find a specific answer.

    20deg. Vs 14.5deg.

I can't find anything written about mixing pressure angles. We have a 12T 48 pitch pinion driving a 48T 48 pitch gear. The pinion is at 400 RPM.

    20deg. Vs 14.5deg.

Thanks, We use AGMA 6 gears. As a test I assembled a gearbox with 20 deg Vs 14.5 and it assembled and turned just fine, sounds OK also. I was wondering what the affect it will have on tooth wear and roll.

    20deg. Vs 14.5deg.

What could happen to the pinion/gear teeth if you have a 20deg pressure angle pinion driving a 14.5 deg. gear?

    Buckingham wear equation

we use Mobilith AW3 grease. Anything heavier steals too much HP. It seems to work well.

    Buckingham wear equation

It is an external spur gear. What we call channeling is when the gear wears down the teeth of the pinion. Our pinions are wider than the gear and the effect looks like a channel in the pinion. Our pinions are from extruded stock so I do not have the option of modifying the teeth without great...

    Buckingham wear equation

Thanks, I will take a closer look at the pinion tooth profile, in the meantime we will case hardend the pinion closer to the 58Rc gear.

    Buckingham wear equation

We are experiencing pinion wear (channeling). I have analyzed the situation using the Buckingham equation for wear of gear teeth and we are nowhere near the conditions where we would experience wear. Does the Buckingham equation have speed limitations? The pinion is at 6200 RPM, hardness of...

    gear pressure angle

Sorry, I am using the (measured value) X (P/Pi) and then the ACOS of that value. I am using our optical comparator to measure across the teeth by the method you explained. We must have some poorly cut gears here because I am getting PA values all over the place. I am getting very consistant...

    gear pressure angle

We are having problems with the parts being and we have bins of unidentified gears that we are trying to identify, specifically the PA. When measuring across the teeth and using the difference to calculate PA how do you determine the number of teeth to measure across? If I measure across 7 and 6...

    gear pressure angle

Thanks, gearcutter, I have found it difficult to get repeatability. Being off just a few thousands on the measured distance cna throw you off 5 deg. We cut our gears to AGMA6 and deviate from the formula for backlash. Will the pressure angle be different if the OD and PD are under formula? We...

    gear pressure angle

Thank you gearcutter. Rather than using verniers, I used our compaator to measure across 7 teeth and then six. The difference is .061". The posted data is measured. The center distance is .758". The pinion is 12/48.

    gear pressure angle

Thank you all very much. This is a great help. As you can surmise, I am new at the intricacies of gear cutting.

    gear pressure angle

We actually suspect our supplier is using whatever hob they have sharp at the time, be it 14.5 or 20 deg. We could then run a 14.5 deg gear against a 20 deg pinion.

    gear pressure angle

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly it is not convienient to visit and check on our gear supplier. We would like a method for checking pressure angle as an in-coming inspection.

    gear pressure angle

We are suspect of the pressure angle we get from our gear suppliers. Documentation has been lost, etc. What is the best way to measure the pressure angle? We have an optical comparator but not a CMM. I have tried to measure the pressure angle on our comaparator but get values like 16 deg. when...

    Duplicating a Gear...?

We are suspicious of the pressure angle of several of our gears we get from suppliers. Documentation has been lost, etc. What is the best way to measure the pressure angle of a gear. We have an optical comparator but not a CMM. I can line up what I think is the angle on the comparator but got...
