Material Properties of Polyurethane & Polyethylene Foams

We would like to do an FEA analysis on a simple foam impact test. The supplier has provided us with the following properties: Polyurethane * Density * Indentation Load Deflection (25% ILD @ 4") * Tensile Strength * Tear (lbs per inch) * Elongation Polyethylene * Compressive Strength...

    Complex Sheet Metal Forming

I'm kind of between a rock and a hard place. The problem is that, originally, the toolmakers said they could do it as a progressive die run part...now they're back pedaling. So we're held to the original cost that we quoted our customer and we can't add any labor beyond the die run part...

    Complex Sheet Metal Forming

This is going to be a progressive die run part. We'll probably just have to experiment with a cheap and dirty die to see how bad the wrinkling is when we make the bend. Maybe we can control it and still make it look nice.

    Complex Sheet Metal Forming

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. Is there any good way to control wrinkling so that it looks natural? (i.e. use the wrinkles to form a design in the sides of the part)

    Complex Sheet Metal Forming

Are there any sheet metal gurus out there that could recommend how to form a C-Channel type arm rest with the front two-thirds of the channel angled downward approximately 8 Degs. (Without any secondary welding operations.)

    American Equivalents to Chinese Steel

Ok, so why can't I find any material data online when I search A27 steel? Matweb doesn't have anything listed.

    American Equivalents to Chinese Steel

Ok, thanks. ASTM A27 at least gives me a starting point.

    American Equivalents to Chinese Steel

We're designing a cast part that will be manufactured in China. We've spec'd a min. yield strength and they're telling us that they'll be using a material called ZG25. I've searched matweb and everywhere on the net and can't seem to find material properties (yield strength, modulous of elast...

    260 ksi yield strength needed

Actually, the bar is supported on either end by a pair of brass bushings that are free to rotate. The slider acts inbetween the bushings. Yes, you are correct as well about the bending of the 5" leg as well, that is seeing some bending deformation while applying the torsion to the longer...

    260 ksi yield strength needed

It's about 1.167" before it begins to go into the .5" radius bend of the short leg where the load is being applied.

    260 ksi yield strength needed

israelkk - We're you calculating the bar in bending or in torsion - I'm not sure that I've explained the concept clearly enough and that you might be misinterpreting how the device is functioning. The design is functioning perfectly fine, we're just trying to get the right steel for the job...

    260 ksi yield strength needed

Cory, Thanks. That helps. That 4140H cost was about 5 times the cost of a comparable piece of regular 4140. 4340 might be an option then. Thanks.

    260 ksi yield strength needed

We were quoted $1190 for a 48"x12"x.5" plate of 4140H Any ideas what that might run in a 4340 or 300M?

    260 ksi yield strength needed

We were hoping to increase our yield strength.....but unfortunately it would come at the expense of losing ductility.

    260 ksi yield strength needed

The 4140 seems to be performing well. According to our FEA analysis we're exceeding the yield strength, but we aren't seeing any visible plastic deformation. I'm sure there's some work hardening going on there though. In a previous post, I was trying to get advice on why our material was...

    260 ksi yield strength needed

The part will be going through about 7.5 degrees of torsional deformation. Will 4340 and 300M perform well under those conditions.

    260 ksi yield strength needed

We're working on a project with a 1/2" square torsion rod that is being used to act as a variable spring by moving a slider with a square hole in it up and down the length of the bar to change the effective length. We're needing a minimum yield strength of 260 ksi for our application. Can...

    4140 Cracking During Heat Treat

Does anyone know of any suppliers that handle 4140H. For some reason, we're having a hard time finding any.

    4140 Cracking During Heat Treat

Hey guys, What's the difference between 4140 and 4140H Is 4140H the same as 4140HRA? -Jesse

    4140 Cracking During Heat Treat

Thanks for all the tips guys. We're going to get with the heat treater and see about going back to the oil quench, as well as trying to get our hands on some 4140H. Of course, for cost reasons, we're opting not to use 4340...although that would be our preference, given the choice. :)
