i agree w/ pmover. it sounds like you have a typical raw natural stream, which can easily be purified w/ your everyday gas processing plant (i.e. remove ethane, propane, butane.....etc which can easily be sold to the petrochemical and heating/fuel markets.) this would likely be much cheaper...

1) submerged in fresh water for more than a few days

i know of one refinery that injected walnut hulls to knock off the fines from the blades.. it didn't completely solve the problem but bought them some time. the expander failed later as it does about once a year, much to the delight of competing refineries in the area.
