Brick Veneer on wood sill plate?

THE CSA Standard may allow it but most Building Codes (including the Ontario Building Code) do not permit masonry supported by wood. Cheers,

50% live load reduction factor ?

Hi again, For that 30 story building, the negineer has used a 50% live load reduction. The National Building Code of Canada has a formula to calculate this reduction factor and the reduction I calculate comes to 78%...... Is there some empirical design formula that I may be missing here ...

    Unreinforced concrete caissons??

Thank you to all for your replies.... No uplift but there are lateral wind loads to be transfered. Appreciate your input. cva1993

    Unreinforced caissons ???

Thanks guys, The caissons are not lined (lined only for the drilling) and vary in size from 6 ft to 10 ft in diameter. The lateral loads when transfered to the top of the caissons I would think would require some type of reinforcing...even the minimum reinforcing.... I appreciate your inputs...

    Unreinforced concrete caissons??

We have a bldg that is 30 stories high on concrete caissons as per the geotech report. The design engineer shows no reinforcing in the caissons that are about 30 ft below grade.......Is this common practice? Thanks,

A question regarding USA 1975 snow load cases...

Hehehhe......here's where the fun starts ! The building manufacturer IS still active in manufacturing pre-eng. buildings, but is not returning our calls. I think they've clued in that our questioning of the original design MAY fault them........ Why the building is currently under review is a...

Anyone ? (My apologies for posting the question....I just thought that at least one person may be able to help me...) thanks , cva1993

A question regarding USA 1975 snow load cases...

A "pre-eng" steel building was designed in 1975. The National Building Code of Canada indicates the snow load cases that need to be considered. The designer of the building was in the U.S. at the time. Is there a possibility that anyone might be able to help me in determining what snow load...

    Dimensions on structural drawings...

Thank you all for your responses. I am noticing that there is a 'trend' for the strucutral engineers to omit these (critical) dimensions and rely on the architecturals. I too have brought up the same issue that WMO brings up in that the steel fabricators have a hard time when the only...

    Dimensions on structural drawings...

Hello all, My question pertains to structrural engineers refusing to show dimensions such as gridline spacing (column spacing), beam spans e.t.c...on the strucutral drawings "because these are shown on the architectural drawings". There are SOME design standards referenced in the Building Code...

    House Foundation

Not sure about your area, but in Ontario Canada most concrete block walls for residential construction are not reinforced. The horizontal cracks may be considered of significance as this implies tension horizontally on the wall (meaning the wall is bending along a horizontal axis) possibly due...

Worm /insect holes in lumber - help sought

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good publications dealing with worm or insect holes in conventional lumber (i.e. 2x4, 2x6 studs). I am conducting strength tests to see how they compare to lumber with no such holes. The NLGA (National Lumber Grading Authority) approves these...
