Will online degrees ever reach high status in the US?

Although not exactly an online degree the U.K. does have the Open University or O.U. The O.U. degrees can be tailored to suit your circumstances and workload but the bottom line is you need to put in a lot of hard work and time to get your degree. With the right profile of courses the degrees...

    Too old at 50

There is a place for the over 50 in the industry but in my opinion he needs to keep his/her skills current. CAD killed a lot of older engineers off because they couldn't bend or didn't want to bend to new technology. Chances are at 50 you have moved up the ladder to a middle manaegment role...

Support the red yellow and blue

No I wasn't a victim to this madness but I did have time on my hands - quite a lot when you start looking carefully at switchfuses. Although this should not happen, according to the regs, installations are going ahead with a mix of colours. The confusion in a cable trunking system could be...

Support the red yellow and blue

alan heard from a sales rep yesterday that the first death had occurred as a direct result of this madness. Again I need to check but I believe only another 2 countries have subscribed to this madness. I find it sad that our own I.E.E. (institute of electrical engineers) didn't block this on...

Looks as though JMW has seen the light and has decided to throw in the towel and become an electrician. Realise that as a cunning contractor I place a lot of the ads for plumbers and electricians at high rates. Guys are moving out of engineering to become tradesmen there by reducing the number...

VSD MOTOR SUPPLY CABLES GETTING HOT

Although you give the sizes of the motors and cables you have not given us a line voltage. It is usual to include a de-rate on your cables when bunching them together like you seem to have done. The U.K. I.E.E. regs would apply a 0.74% derate onto the cables installed like this. Certainly...

500hp unloaded motor jerks on startup using soft start controller

Ronnied You say an intermittent fault. Is this potable water pumping station in the middle of a field, fed from an L.V. source. Can I assume there are other motors running? What is your voltage like? At the end of a long cable you may be running short of volts.

Thanks JMW I remember the conversion from Imperial to metric pipe size together with some of the problems it caused. Apart from getting very cheesed off the only real risk to the plumber was death by drowning which was unlikely to be quick! Harmonisation started in the U.K. many years ago...

Over the years a lot of people have passed themselves off as engineers in the U.K. To quote an old yesterday I couldn't spell engineer today I are one! A lot of harm was doing certainly during the 1970s when these people became established. By the gift of the gab or Buggins choice some of...

Agree with JMW that harmonisation is generally good engineering practice but not when you are replacing an established system that has been around for years. In 30 or 40 years time there will still be distribution boards with the old colours on and the electrician will need to remember to...

Contactor before or after the VFD, or ?

Although I can understand the merits of an emergency stop system using the electronics of the VSD to brake the motor in my opinion we need to keep the emergency stop system as simple as possible. A simple device operating an upstream contactor should shut the system down whether the smoke is...

Support the red yellow and blue

In the political madness and spin that surrounds the U.K. and its envolvement in Europe the political numbties who run the ship have managed to slip an amazing piece of legislation through that seems to have been accepted. For many years the U.K. has used RED, YELLOW and BLUE to represent L1...
