i think this problem occurs when the view is in draft quality and not in the high quality. we have the same problem with a printer, when you print some drawings on this printer and the view is in draft quality the view is empty. when you set the view to high quality you will get it.
when you mark the assembly you can select in the menue edit - show with dependents - this configuration. all components in the assembly or subassembly will unhide. :-)
