Expansion Bellows Meridional Membrane Stress Equation S3

You can envision the S3 stress as the stress in the bellows sidewall that is resisting internal pressure force that is trying to blow the crown off of the convolution.

Appendix 2 Flange Analysis for Unrestrained Piping Expansion Joints in Anchored Systems

XL83NL Thanks for your reply. There aren't additional loads. The loads on the flange are in fact reduced for the operating condition as the Hd load is no longer being applied. There appears to in fact be counter load from the bellows that reduces to total force (and operating moment on the...

Appendix 2 Flange Analysis for Unrestrained Piping Expansion Joints in Anchored Systems

Hello, Just wondering if anyone has come across the adaptation of the ASME Section VIII, Div.1 Appendix 2 flange analysis for an unrestrained expansion joint in an anchored piping system. In this situation, the loads on the flange are different because much of the thrust that is pulling the...

    ASME Section III Sight Glass

We are frequently involved in Section III work. We need to understand how glass is permitted as a material inside a product we have to supply. We cannot buy the product. There other circumstances that prevent us from doing so.

    ASME Section III Sight Glass

All, I know that ASME Section III isn't touched on very much here but on the off chance that someone has been involved, I have a question regarding it. My company has to provide an ASME Section III, Class 3 (Subsection ND) sight glass for one of its nuclear clients. I've reviewed the...

Large Rect. Opening in a Cylindrical Shell

Thanks inno2. I know there are shell and tube condenser manufacturers that face this issue all the time. just not sure how they approach it. i suspect that they use a standard approach that has not resulted in failure. what that approach is, is anyone's guess. i may have to FEA the thing to...

Large Rect. Opening in a Cylindrical Shell

I am working on a large expansion joint design. This expansion joint has a very large rectangular nozzle (88" x 53") that goes radially into a round shell (78" OD). The long side of the rectangular opening runs parallel to centerline of the 78" shell. I know that I can use Appendix 1-7 for...

    Damper Actuators

Just wondering if anyone knows where I could find a design standard for sizing damper actuators. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Damper Design

Thank for your help. I was actually wondering if there were any guidelines or standards for mechanical design.

    Damper Design

Just wondering if anyone out there knows if there is a handbook or standard for mechanical design of air flow dampers. Louver dsmpers, Guillotine Dampers, Butterfly dampers, etc. Any information that someone on this forum could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Reinforced Flathead

Dr. AE Blach has a method for designing honey comb flat heads. If you're interested, give me your e-mail and I'll send it to you.

Impact testing of expansion joint root rings (Appendix 26 EJ)

I tend to agree. I will change the root rings to 3/4" double XX pipe SA 53 pipe. This pipe falls under Curve B and allows me to avoid the impact testing issue altogether. I don't see a reason to impact test root rings. It's just a major waste of time and money.

Impact testing of expansion joint root rings (Appendix 26 EJ)

I am presently designing a high pressure expansion joint per Appendix 26 of the 2004 Edition of the ASME Section VIII, Div.1 Pressure Vessel code. I would like to use 1" diameter A36 bar for the root rings with 1/2" x 1" high thick SA 516 70 gussets welded to the root ring to provide the...

High Temperature Allowable Stresses for Bellows

I have serious reservations about the use of Inconel 625. It's grain structure can be seriously compromised when it is used above 1000F and then brought down to room temperature repeatedly. Even the 625LCF material is not recommended over 1200F. I believe that refractory lining is my only...

High Temperature Allowable Stresses for Bellows

Thank you for time and your help. I will try to get some creep data from Haynes for Alloy 230.

High Temperature Allowable Stresses for Bellows

Thank you for your response. I was actually considering the use of Haynes Alloy 230 which has some very remarkable properties. Unfortunately, it is the creep end of things that I am not that familiar with. If I had creep data, how would I use it to postulate an allowable stress? Would ASME...

High Temperature Allowable Stresses for Bellows

I am attempting to design a 16" bellows expansion joint for a 2000F application @ 80 psig. At this temperature, it is enormously difficult to select an appropriate bellows material. Even if I am able to do this, at 2000F any material I select would be in the creep range. Should I decide that...
