Colin,
Take a look here: www.DLIengineering.com - we can set you up with a vibration analysis test stand and can use our automated diagnostic system to tell you what specific problem the unit has (i.e. gears Vs. bearings vs. shaft looseness etc.) - this is our specialty and we have been...
I agree with electricpete - If you are interested in condition monitoring of bearings and gearboxes, vibration is the appropriate technology to use (the ultrasound equipment vendors will agree with this statement)
Ultrasound can be useful in lubricating bearings - as electricpete mentioned...
You can download a vibration units conversion program here:

This one has a unit of "AdB" for acceleration and "VdB" for velocity in decibles.

Here you can find a free online copy of the book "Introduction to Machine Vibration" by Glenn White. Hard copies are also available. I refer to this book frequently even after 13 years in this field. There is also a glossary of vibration anlysis...

The first link is to an application note that describes how to use Ultrasound along with vibration to improve your lubrication regimen. I apologize that it is not "generic" - but the concepts are. The secod...
There are alot of good bearing wear related articles available for free here:

Many include real graphs with explanations of the peaks and patterns. Hope you'll find them useful.
Also, collecting data in 3 axis does not take longer if you have a...

Sorry if we inconvenienced anyone. We had some technical problems with the vibration resource center. It is up and running again and we will continue to expand and improve it. Enjoy!
That's weird - if you scroll down you should see a whole bunch of hyper links you can click on and the entire reference center...email me if you still have problems

I wanted to let everyone know that we have just posted a free Vibration Reference Center on our web site. (url above)
The Reference Center contains a large glossary of vibration terms and definitions (incase you forgot what...

vendor warning - we have 4-plane in-place balance software to use on a laptop or our DCX mobile industrial computer platform. Works via a 4 channel PC card.
SignalAQ software works with the same card for advanced troubleshooting / analysis / real time analysis / cross...
I was referring to the RMS as opposed to the peak or pk to pk when looking at a waveform, not calculating the total RMS over a time period. If you draw a sine wave you can talk about its amplitude in these three ways...
4. This is true - I understood your original question to mean you wanted to...
Mike, you can email me if you want more information - here are some thoughts:
1. Yes, displacement is for low, velocity mid and acceleration for high frequencies, however, this also depends on your sensor i.e. if you are using an accelerometer to take a low speed measurement, then you're better...
